LIHUE — A member of the Kauai Police Department was recognized for her heroic service during an award ceremony last week.
Kauai Police Department (KPD) Officer Serenity Kalama was illuminated and recognized as employee of the month by the Kauai Police Commission during its Friday, Oct. 25, meeting.
It was reported that on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at approximately 7:40 p.m. officers were dispatched to a residence in Lihue following a call regarding two unconscious individuals found by a relative.
First on the scene was Officer Kamala, who discovered a female adult on the floor motionless followed by a male adult unresponsive on a bed nearby.
Officer Kalama immediately recognized the high level dangerous signs of opioid overdose and swiftly administered Naloxone also known as Narcan to both individuals.
She successfully revived both individuals and assisted them while awaiting for emergency personnel to arrive and provide necessary medical assistance.
Both individuals were then transported to the Wilcox Medical Center in Lihue for further treatment.
“Officer Kalama showed incredible poise during a very challenging situation,” said KPD Chief Todd Raybuck.
“Her actions were remarkable because it gave these individuals the opportunity to have a second chance at life with their loved ones. In that moment, she wasn’t just a police officer, she was a lifeline.”
The police commission presented the officer with a lei, along with a certificate, to commemorate her heroic efforts.
