PUHI — The Island School girls cross-country team took the Central Pacific Bank Kauai Interscholastic Federation championship meet on Satruday, Oct. 19, at the Island School course by collecting 26 points when its top five runners broke the finish plane in the top eight positions.
However, the effort fell short, despite the CPB KIF meet having double points value. Following a comparison of the entire KIF season, Kapaa High School girls were declared the overall champions based on the Lady Warriors taking first place honors throughout the season.
During the final meet, the Lady Warriors finished in second place with 42 points after its scoring runners finished in the top 12 spots.
Individually, Kauai High School runner Aileah Villatora was the first finisher on a run that stopped the clock at 21 minutes, 37.63 seconds. The Red Raider girls team finished in third place with 57 points after its scoring runners filled in the top 18 spots, punctuated by the Kauai Christian Academy runner Abbie Fowler, who tripped the clock in 11th place, overall. The KCA second runner, Mikhaila DeRoos, finished in 19th place.
On the boys course, Kauai High School took both the championship meet and the overall CPB KIF championship after finishing the Saturday race with 31 points after its scoring runners finished in the top 12.
Waimea High School, whose Cedric Crampton-Nabaa finished first at 18:33.19, ended the race in second place with 46 points. Island School, missing the performance of Khyler Greenleaf, who was battling a cold bug, finished in third with 59 points. Kapaa boys rounded out the leaderboard in fourth with 97 points.
Island School athletic director Jerry Jona said the KIF league has a total of 14 spots for the state meet representation. This breaks down to each of the CPB KIF champion team receiving seven automatic spots.
The remaining allocations for the boys include Waimea High School getting three spots represented by Crampton-Nabaa, Zach White-Tzeng and Hezekiah Salazar. Island School will get four spots represented by Spencer Cook, Rocco Sand, Kainoa Love and Zander Bradley.
For the girls, the seven spots are allocated to Kauai High School with two spots being filled by Aileah Villatora and Laysa Turner. Island School will have five spots filled by Ashlyn Worley, Eva-Rose Rapp, Avani Keahiolalo, Kolohaiaheahe Kuhaulua and Michaela Meuldijk.
The 2024 Honolulu Marathon Hawaii High School Athletic Association Hawaii Cross-Country state championships will be held at the Keopuolani Regional Park in Kahului, Maui, on Nov. 2.
