LIHUE — The Kauai High School air rifle team netted the highest score of the season to defeat Indiana High School, announced Marcela Hornos on Tuesday.
The Red Raiders air rifle marksmen netted 1,108.3 to 257.4 in the 2004 National Sporter Air Rifle League for their second straight win in the league.
Andrew Sadamitsu fired a 284.4 to lead the Kauai team that included Jacob Andres, Brayden Bartholomew, and Taylee Yoshimoto, all residents of Lihue and coached by Keith Hornos.
“Kauai High School is competing in the Elite Division where they are currently ranked in first place,” said Erik
Anderson of the National Sporter league. “Within the Junior Rifle Club Conference, they are in first place. They have a 2-0 record.
Anderson reported that Indiana High School also shot their highest team score of the season, being led by Gavin Dicken, who shot a 267.4. The remaining contributing members include Trevor Boychuck, Ethan Coleman and Ryan Dicken. Indiana High School is from Indiana, Pennsylvania, and is coached by John Hartman.
Overall, Indiana High School is ranked 111 and has an 0-1 record.
Next up, Kauai High School will compete against Fontana High School MCJROTC from Fontana, California. Fontana MCJROTC currently has a 1-1 record. Indiana High School will compete agains Redmond MCJROTC from Redmond, Oregon. Redmond MCJROTC currently has a 0-1 record.
The National Sporter Air Rifle League is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts, including an 8-week regular season that is currently taking place, followed by the post season.
Tlhe Champions Division in the league is reserved for the top teams in the countru. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.
During each event, the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competition but adapted to high school aged athletes.
Each athlete will shoot 10 shots in three different shooting positions, including kneeling, prone and standing. Scoring in decimal, each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete’s total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
