ANAHOLA — Two fires broke out on the east side amid a red flag warning on Thursday.
The Kauai Fire Department (KFD) responded to calls of a brush fire along Kuhio Highway in Anahola near the marketplace at around 1:05 p.m. on Thursday.
Fire crews with the Kapaa and Kaiakea Fire Stations, Air 1, Tender 1, and the on-duty battalion chief all responded to the call.
At approximately 2 p.m., a second call was received for a 5,000-square-foot fire separate from the marketplace fire near Kalalea Road.
Kuhio Highway was briefly closed in both directions while firefighters controlled the area and checked on homes.
The fires were controlled at around 3:45 p.m. with the Kauai Emergency Management Agency (KEMA) monitoring the area for hot spots along with Air 1 on stand-by.
