LIHU‘E — Kapaa High School girls volleyball suffered its first loss of the season and Kauai High School girls volleyball celebrated its rare straight set victory during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation matches played on Friday night.
Waimea Menehune, visiting the Lady Warriors at Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapaa, swept the series by taking the junior varsity matches 26-24, 17-25 and 15-12.
On the varsity courts, the Menehune needed four sets to blemish the Lady Warriors record 25-21, 12-25, 26-25 and 25-19.
Over at the Wilcox Gymnasium, Kauai High School also swept its series, taking the JV contests 20-25, 25-18 and 15-13 over the Island School Voyagers before the varsity Red Raiders swept the Voyagers 25-20, 25-21 and 25-21.
Red Raiders libero Makenzie Nii quickly pushed Kauai ahead of the Voyagers in the first set when she strung up five points from the service block, including an ace, for a 15-8 go-ahead. That string included whacks from Kiriana Foster securing the side, as well as bangs from Leila Caoagas and Kamryn Yates widening the gap.
Island School’s Kolohaiaheahe Kuhaulua came up the middle, and coupled with a pair of Kauai miscues, closed the margin to 15-11.
Voyager Mary Magoun served up three points, including an ace, to pull to within two points at 16-14.
But Yates pulled the Raiders up on three points from the service block, including an ace, and a whack from Navaeh Smith before Katelyn Lopes shut the door.
Kauai High School next travels to Bernice Hundley Gym on Tuesday to face Kapaa High School. Island School will make the trek over to Clem Gomes Gym to face a rejuvenated Menehune squad.
The JV contests serve up from 5:30 p.m. at both sites with the varsity contest serving up 25 minutes following the completion of the JV games.
