WAIMEA — You have to cross Da Bridge to get to “The Nightmare on the Westside.”
Organizers said the two-day, free drug and alcohol free event will take place on Oct. 25 and 26 on the grounds of the Waimea Canyon Park basketball courts area, and everyone is invited. Entry is gauged by fear factor with the time between 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. being reserved for “Non Scary,” and the time slot between 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. being reserved for “Scary.”
Sponsored primarily by The Tow Truck LLC — that’s the same guys who did Da Slippah Drop at this year’s Visitor Industry Charity Walk, the Nightmare on the Westside is a haunted maze that is built by local families and community groups.
“Seeing the joy of the kids, and the frightened faces of the teens motivates James Henriques too do a fun family activity for the community,” one of the Nightmare organizers said. “Growing up in the Westside of Kauai, there was not a whole lot to do during Halloween. This is why this Nightmare event keeps growing.”
During the last year’s run, organizers said about 1,000 people a day passed through the network of mazes. The maze is approximately 10,000 square feet with tunnels, and up to a dozen sections, including the Chain saw section that organizers say should not be missed.
Volunteers are being invited to step forward to help set up the tents on Oct. 21 and Oct. 22, or to help volunteer for one of the maze sections. Interested? Call Marlene at 808-631-4131.
Coordinated by volunteers, the goal of Nightmare on the Westside is to provide a safe and fun event for young children, parents and adults from all over Kauai. Admission to the event is one canned food (check the expiration date. Expired food doesn’t count) per person per entry.
Food collected on Friday night will be donated to the Holy Cross Parish in Kalaheo for use in the church’s food bank program, and food collected on Saturday night will be turned over to Child and Family Service Nana’s House.
Additionally, there will be food vendors and keiki activities and games.
