LIHUE — When the Kauai Interscholastic Federation air riflery matches get underway starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Island School range, this will be the first time KIF air riflery participants will experience the new format, unless previously they participated in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association state matches.
“This is the first of two all-island quad matches,” said Sean Magoun, coach of the Island School teams. “Each of the four participating KIF member schools will send their best four male shooters, and their best four female shooters. All of the 32 shooters will represent the best of the best in a 3 x 20 match.”
Island School dropped both its matches to Kauai High School during the Sept. 28 competition that was held in the traditional format of having five shooters from the boys and girls being designated as team shooters. Additionally, each school was allowed up to eight shooters to capitalize on the number of bays available.
Kauai High School boys, led by the high point of Jacob Andres recording a 253, downed the Voyager boys, 1,228-758 accumulated by Island Schools’ four boys shooters.
On the girls range, Kauai High School girls, led by the high point from Caylee Garma at 240, stayed ahead of the Voyager girls, 1146-1081.
Rochelle Uri, of the Waimea High School girls, recorded the highest point of the day at 265, as the Menehune wahina beat Kapaa High School 1,250-1,062 at the Kauai High School range.
Similarly, Waimea’s Rhomsen Fermin recorded the highest point of the day for all the boys teams with a 259, beating his teammate Fredy Padamada by three points. The Menehune beat Kapaa 1,224-1,154.
