Kauai County officials are advising the public of the appropriate ways to dispose of waste and recyclables, and also reminding the community that dumping waste on roadways, vacant lots and public or private property is illegal.
“In the past few weeks, crews with the Hawaii Department of Transportation have retrieved trash and other materials that have been dumped in public roadways islandwide,” said County of Kauai Engineer Troy Tanigawa.
“Not only does this pose a risk to the public’s safety, but it’s also illegal, with violators potentially facing hefty fines.”
Illegal dumpers can be charged with the offense of petty misdemeanor, with penalties ranging from community service for first-time offenders to fines of $500 to $1,000 for subsequent offenses consisting of littering, yard waste, dumping bagged trash, loose waste appliances, tires, construction along with demolition waste, auto parts and any type of furniture.
Although the Lihue Refuse Transfer Station (RTS) is temporarily closed for renovations, it will reopen by November. Waste and recyclables can be appropriately disposed of and diverted at the county’s RTS and Kekaha Landfill.
To report any illegal dumping, call KPD Dispatch at 808-241-1711. If you can, safely photograph or take down the license plate of violators.
