LIHUE — Pink is the color of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the month of October was welcomed with splashes of pink everywhere, including at the sign waving event coordinated by the Kauai Committee on the Status of Women at Kauai Community College.
“We have everyone here,” said Edie Ignacio Neumiller, the Kauai Commissioner to the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women. “We have volunteers, survivors and supporters.”
One of those survivors was Judy Stout, who turned out with her husband Gene, who was a caregiver during Judy’s battle), and visits Kauai, annually.
“We have to do something,” Judy Stout said. “I even have my cancer shirt from 10 years ago when I was told I’m cancer-free. I had to change the numbers with these paste-on numbers, and I’m missing a few grandchildren that arrived after my shirt, but I’m still cancer-free.”
Kittren Cade, of the American Cancer Society, came to help with informational brochures and giveaways that included pink ribbons and other cancer awareness bling.
Cyndi Ayonon, of the Zonta Club of Kauai and Chair of the Christmas Fund, was announced the winner of the gift basket provided on behalf of the Kauai Committee on the Status of Women.
“Cyndi’s bling pink outfit included matching cap and pink shoes,” Neumiller said.
Cade said the Breast Cancer Awareness campaign reaches far with programs, such as the National Football League adopting pink during October.
The Kauai Committee on the Status of Women announced the historic County Building would be illuminated in pink for the month of October to bring awareness to breast cancer.
Over at the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball matches taking place at the Kauai High School gym, the Red Raider volleyball players, including the junior varsity program, sported pink hair ribbons on the court, and according to a football official, the officials should have some pink when the KIF football games kick off on Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium.
