October started with a bang, as Kauai High School girls volleyball players (yes, even the Junior Varsity) showed up with pink hair ribbons (the security guard said October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month) since the players couldn’t join the Kauai Committee on the Status of Women at their sign waving campaign at Kauai Community College.

Kauai High School athletic trainer Kevin Cadiente was excited to see Kirby Yates (they were both in the same KHS graduating class), a relief pitcher for the Texas Rangers (yes, security, he had his KIF stamp, too).
At last check, the Kauai Humane Society was still accepting ticket orders for its gala fundraiser, “PAWS for Celebration 2024 – An Evening of Superheros” that will unfold on Saturday from 5 to 8:15 p.m. at the Kauai Humane Society campus in Kipu with lots to eat, live music, a silent and live auction, taiko performance, and even visits from some of the shelter animals.
For people who miss this, the Kauai Humane Society website indicates that they plan to have an online auction, too. Watch for details.
And speaking of superheros, Mary Ann Ornellas (she’s a survivor!) is getting ready to open The Halloween Store pop-up at Kukui Grove Center so people can be appropriately garbed for Halloween.
This Saturday, we get to meet some real-life heroes when the County of Kauai, the Kauai Fire Departments and many community partners host the Fire Prevention Week Launch at the Kauai Philippines Cultural Center from 9 a.m. And, it’s free.
