LIHUE — Drug Take Back Day will return this October after a successful event in spring.
During the last event in April, more than 3,200 pounds of medication were turned in at collection sites throughout Hawai’i, so the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is once again collaborating with the Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) to host another round on Saturday, Oct. 26.
Kaua‘i residents are reminded to double-check and locate unused, unwanted or expired medications and take advantage of yet another opportunity to safely dispose of the items.
The event will take place at KPD headquarters in Lihue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Individuals wanting to remain anonymous can use the drop-off service available on the east side of the building.
Several forms of medications will be accepted, including tablets, capsules, liquids and patches either prescribed or non-prescribed. It’s important to note that needles and syringes, whether new or used, will not be accepted.
The national campaign is focused on providing the community with a safe, secure and responsible method of disposing of medications. Improper medication disposal negatively affects the environment and endangers aquatic life.
Additionally, unused medications in homes pose a significant risk of misuse or abuse. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, most individuals who misuse prescription drugs obtain them from friends or family.
Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands, creating a dangerous and often tragic situation.
For people unable to participate in Drug Take Back Day, KPD headquarters offers a year-round medication drop box for anonymous disposal of unused or expired medications at any time.
