Joaquin Nicholas Arruda Jr.
Joaquin Nicholas Arruda Jr., of Kekaha, passed away on Sept. 2, 2024, at the age of 91. He was born on Dec. 6, 1932, in Waimea, Kauai. He worked as a building maintenance supervisor for the federal government.
He was preceded in death by wife Leilani J. Arruda, parents Joaquin and Lucy Arruda Sr., daughter Roxanne Arruda and granddaughter Trinette Vegas.
He is survived by sons Joaquin Nicholas (Arlene) Arruda III of Kauai, Richard (Sandra) Arruda of Kauai, David (Glenda) Arruda of Kauai, daughter Sandra (Sam) Vegas of Maui, grandchildren Fred Aki III (Suli), Clarance Aki (Chelsey), Shannon Daliva (Ben), Jaimie-Lee Cacal (Rayson), Nikita-Lynn Moniz (Oliver), Janice Purisima (John), Jaqlyn Arruda, Jaysen Purisima (Barbie), Jaxen Arruda, Richard Arruda Jr. (Cindy), Noah Arruda, Samuel Vegas III (Mane), Isaac Vegas, Kyle Vegas, Kiana Vegas, Kawika Arruda, Damian Arruda, Sterling Arruda, Jayson Arruda, Zaidyn Arruda, Maxon Arruda, four great-grandchildren, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service will be held on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, at the Garden Island Mortuary in Lawai. Visitation from 9 to 11 a.m., celebration of life at 11 a.m., and burial will follow at Kauai Veterans Cemetery at 1 p.m. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Loretta Rapada Agosto
Loretta “Loring” Rapada Agosto passed away on Sept. 1, 2024, at the Queens Wahiawa on Oahu at the age of 95. She was born on Oct. 3, 1928, in Sinait, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. Retired Private Caregiver and Certified Nurse’s Aide at the Kauai Care Center in Waimea formerly known as Kauai Care Home. A beloved and caring mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and guardian to those that knew her. She loved to sing and dance with her grandchildren. She enjoyed yearly visits to Las Vegas, watching the Hallmark Channel and coloring. She loved to read, whether it was the daily newspaper, the Bible or books on political figures, past and present.
Loretta was preceded in death by husband Fortunato Agosto Sr., father Juan “Apo” Rapada, mother Dominga Raposas Rapada, sons Robert “Aggos” Agosto, Fortunato “Foto” Agosto Jr., grandsons Tyson Pagador and Ryan Yamamoto.
Loretta is survived by her children Kathryn (Dennis) Yamamoto, Ben (Anna) Agosto, Elizabeth “Liz” (George) Kawamura, Jane (Rodney) Williams, Lorna (Tommy) Takayama, Lesley (Michael) Castillo, Brandon Agosto, grandchildren Sherri (Larry) Ephan, Michelle (Kyle) Furutani, Jacy (Pastor Kipi) Higa, Shilum Agosto, Shayla Agosto, Shaun (Jacie) Kawamura, Tia Kawamura, Rory (Jeni Kaohelaulii) Agosto, Megan (Clifton) Ephan, Christian Agosto, Daniel (Rachel) Takayama, Micah Takayama, Hailey Castillo, Alana Williams, Noah Takayama, Mikayla Castillo, 23 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024, at the Scared Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church, 9496 Kaumaulii Highway, Waimea. Visitation with family at 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. followed by Celebration of Life and Mass at 11 a.m. Burial will be private. Casual attire and flowers welcome.
Murray C. Hudson
Murray C. Hudson, of Princeville, Kauai, passed away peacefully on Aug. 31, 2024, at Wilcox Hospital surrounded by his devoted family. Born Oct. 12, 1928, in Breckenridge, Texas. Murray served overseas in the United States Navy during World War II and was awarded with the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military service, Murray graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas as a Petroleum Engineer.
Murray retired as President of Esso China Ltd. (Exxon) after 35 years of service spanning six countries including Benghazi, Libya, Melbourne, Australia, Jakarta, Indonesia, Singapore, Rangoon, Burma and Guangzhou, China. He conducted drilling exploration in these six countries involving 150 offshore wells where doubled oil production and made important oil discoveries.
Known for his positive and lasting relationships with the employees under his management, he developed home ownership programs, creating and maintaining excellent morale among those in various countries where he served.
Among his many community projects, following Hurricane Iniki, Murray volunteered to assist those in need by restoring many public areas, including his work with Habitat for Humanity to rebuild a home in Hanalei. For two years he faithfully delivered Meals on Wheels to families from Hanalei to Wainiha. As an active Lions member he repaired bus stops, built park benches, and even mowed the Hanalei Lookout for several years. Murray also selflessly managed his neighborhood Sunset Drive Community Association for 27 years. In addition, he served as Secretary and Treasurer of the Wednesday Golf Club at Wailua Golf Course for numerous years. Murray never looked for accolades for his many years of good deeds.
Survived by his devoted wife of 40 years Sabina, sons Roy (Chris) of Austin, Texas, Dan (Anabelle) of South Carolina, Jon (Mike) of St. Louis, four grandchildren Daniel, Ashley (Kyle), Jonathan (Jessica), Sam (Sarah), great-grand twins Hayes, Luka, step-children,Perry (Fonda), Sherrie (Richard), granddaughters Angeline and Ashley.
Ceremony with Military Honors is scheduled for Oct. 12, 2024 (Murray’s 96th Birthday) at Kauai Veterans Cemetery, Hanapepe at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hawaii Parkinson Association, 2228 Liliha St, Suite 206, Honolulu, HI 96817.
