LIHUE — Kapaa High School took advantage of Micah Rapozo’s foot on Saturday when the Warriors rumbled to a 39-10 victory over Kauai High School in a Kauai Interscholastic Federation football game that was played in the afternoon at Vidinha Stadium.
Starting with a pair of field goals and a touchdown in the first half, the Warriors defense limited the Red Raiders to its sole scores in the fourth quarter when a Kai Potts field goal lit up the Kauai scoreboard in the final six minutes of play.
Kapaa’s Rapozo delivered a pair of field goals and graced four of the five Warrior touchdowns.
Following a scoreless jockeying between the two teams, Rapozo broke the ice in the final 30 seconds of the first quarter with his field goal from the Red Raider 8-yard stripe. He followed that with his second field goal in the second quarter when Kapaa’s possession that opened the quarter sputtered at the Kauai 12-yard line. Rapozo split the uprights with 6:41 showing in the half.
After the Warriors recovered a short kick, Warrior signal caller Evan Daligdig punched the game’s first TD on a 10-yard keeper. Rapozo’s point after touchdown (PAT) kick gave Kapaa the 13-0 bulge at the break.
Daligdig added to the tally coming off the break with a 25-yard passing score to Kamalei Gonsalves for the 20-0 reading following another Rapozo PAT kick.
Taking to the air, Daligdig engineered another long distance scoring aerial with a minute and some ticks left in the quarter. A two-point PAT effort came up empty as Kapaa entered the final period with a 26-0 lead.
The Warriors scored two more touchdowns and two PAT kicks in the final 12 minutes of play before the Red Raiders were able to find the end zone.
Daligdig hit pay dirt with a 9-yard keeper to open the final 9:55 minutes of play, while Thomas Sonny plowed for 20 yards in Kapaa’s final scoring with 4:05 remaining in the contest.
With 30 ticks remaining in the contest, Kauai’s No. 2 signal caller Mana Inouye found Mana Kaui at the end of a 14-yard scoring pass with Potts’ boot gracing the TD as Kapaa took the knee for the remaining ticks.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Kapaa junior varsity was a 10-7 winner over the Red Raiders.
Kauai, now 1-win, 1-loss in the regular season, hosts Waimea, currently 0-2 in the regular season, at Vidinha Stadium on Saturday. The junior varsity contest kicks off starting at noon with the varsity contest kicking off 30 minutes following the JV game.
