Stretch of Kalalau Trail to reopen

NAPALI COAST — A popular trail on the north side of the island is scheduled to partially reopen about two weeks after a virus sickened dozens of people and forced its closure.

First responders and residents honored for heroics

LIHUE — The Fire Commission, during its regular meeting on Tuesday, joined the Kauai Fire Department, including the Ocean Safety Bureau, in recognizing two groups of individuals — heroic residents and first responders — for their respective involvement in two lifesaving rescues at two different sites.

Report backs empty-homes tax on Oahu

HONOLULU — The Hawaii Appleseed Center for Law & Economic Justice is recommending that the Honolulu City Council impose a 3-5 percent empty-homes tax, citing a worsening housing crisis on Oahu where more than 8 in 10 renters now spend at least 30 percent of their income on housing costs.

Club 100 Memorial Service announced

HANAPEPE — The West Kauai Club 100 will host its 76th Memorial Service for fallen 100th Infantry Battalion veterans on Sept. 29 at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.
