LIHUE — Kapaa High School girls volleyball improved to 4-0 on the Kauai Interscholastic Federation season, and Waimea High School picked up its first season win after winning in four sets against Kauai High School on Friday night.
The Lady Warriors, hosting the Island School Voyagers at its home gym at the Bernice Hundley Gym, were winners in straight sets, according to Kapaa High School Greg Gonsalves.
No final figures were available, but the Island School Junior Varsity team was victorious against the Kapaa JV.
Over at the new Kauai High School gymnasium, the Menehune JV were straight set winners over Kauai High School, 25-19, 25-19, and 25-8.
On the varsity courts, the Menehune picked up its first season win in four sets, 25-22, 17-25, 27-26, and 25-21.
The 27-26 score in the third set is the result of the gymnasium scoreboard and does not indicate any of the officials discussions surrounding the play when Kauai attempted to knot the contest at 27 points.
Following a Kauai net violation, and a hit from Waimea’s Milana Schaefer, the Menehune held a 19-16 lead before Waimea suffered a service error and a net violation that knotted the set 19-19.
A Kauai passing error put the Menehune up before a Katelyn Lopes hammer stalemated play.
Kamryn Yates pulled Kauai up, 20-20 before a Kauai service error knotted the contest.
Waimea took a 23-21 lead on a Kauai hitting error and a Kalia Yaris hit only to have the Red Raiders answer with a Naomi Ikimaka bang.
Waimea went up on a Kaulana Huihui-Caberto ace only to have Ikimaka answer before the officials’ discussion at Kauai 26, Waimea 27.
The Menehune broke away from a 12-12 stalemate in the fourth set, and never allowed Kauai to take the lead before a Yaris bang and a Red Raider hitting error ended the night.
With the results of Friday night play, Kapaa holds the lead with a 4-0 record followed by Island School at 2-2. Kauai and Waimea are tied at 1-3 each.
Kapaa next travels to the Clem Gomes Gym to take on Waimea on Tuesday while the Red Raiders are at the Wilcox Gymnasium to face the Voyagers. The JV contest at both sites serve up from 5:30 p.m. with the varsity contest serving up 25 minutes following the completion of the JV games.
