Congratulations, Leona Sa McDermott, Lisa Aki, and all the supporters of Kauai Special Olympic athletes for getting past the $25,000 goal for the Badges and Buckets event that brought some excitement to the Walmart store, last week. Leona, who was at the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball contest on Tuesday night, said it was a heartening sight to see the Waimea High School, Kauai High School, and Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School students come out in force to support the Special Olympics athletes.

Kudos to the step-up efforts of the Kauai RSVP volunteers, and the Agency on Elderly Affairs staff for the 9.11 Patriots Day event where Kealoha Takahashi of the Agency on Elderly Affairs was tied up at the Council meeting (the Kauai County Council was also not present because of the Council meeting), and Grace Delos Reyes was taking care of a family emergency.
Kauai Veterans Council commander Mary Kay Hertog announced the Veterans Celebration on Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Vidinha Stadium where this year’s spotlight shines on veterans from the Korean and Vietnam War…Charlene Dorsey said we’ll have the installation of the island’s Miss Veteran 2024 before then.
The Alzheimer’s Association Kauai Regional Coordinator Cindy Fowler said the Oct. 19 weekend is busy so she is announcing the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s that will take place on Oct. 19 with registration starting at 7:15 a.m. at the Puakea Golf Course. Walkers participating can also register online at www.alz.org/kauaiwalk, or email alohainfo@alz.org.
Ka Kama Kai presents the free Ocean Clinic on Saturday at Kalapaki Beach (Duke’s is also having its beach volleyball tournament) where participants will learn about Ho‘okele, or wayfinding, Kai Palekana, or ocean safety, Ku hoe, or stand-up paddle boarding, and Wa‘a, or canoe ride.
