LIHUE — Khyler Greenleaf of Island School was on a mission during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation preseason cross-country meet hosted by Island School on Saturday.
Greenleaf took a lead spot in the pack of 71 boys, and by the first uphill had chipped out an early lead. Building on that lead with nearly every step, Greenleaf handily broke the 20-minute mark for the three-mile course by tripping the clock at 18 minutes, 36 .79 seconds, more than a minute faster than the race’s second place runner, Spencer Cook who also donned the Voyager jersey.
Waimea High School’s Cedric Crampton-Nabaa filled in the third overall slot, followed by Louis Reale of Kapaa stopping the clock at 20:04.83 in fourth place overall. Kauai High School runners Liam Juvan and Kobe Claussen filled in the fifth and sixth place slots, respectively.
On the girls course, Aileah Villatora, returning as one of the top female performers during the 2023 cross-country circuit, took advantage of the preseason status of the meet to familiarize herself with the track and run against the clock, said her father who called out pace times at several points along the three-mile course.
Villatora stopped the clock at 22:50.62, which was nearly a minute ahead of second place finisher Eva-Rose Rapp of Island School.
The first Kapaa runner, Lucy Smith, finished fourth overall at 24:00.03, and the first Waimea runner, Taylee Yamamoto, crossed 14th overall at 29:34.14.
According to a revised cross-country schedule, Island School will host the first KIF cross-country race on Saturday at the course set up on the Voyager campus. The first race starts at 7:30. a.m.
