Janel M. Ruiz
Janel M. Ruiz, of Koloa, passed away on June 28, 2024, on Oahu at the age of 54. She was born on June 1, 1970, on Oahu. She was a cashier at Hardware Hawaii.
She was preceded in death by father Lloyd Hamamura, paternal grandparents Masaru Hamamura and Lorraine Yahiku, maternal grandparents Yasuo Furumori and Eloise Thompson, and father-in-law Damascio Ruiz, Jr.
She is survived by husband Ross A. Ruiz, son Keli‘i Ruiz of Oahu, daughter Ranel Ruiz of Las Vegas, Nevada, grandchildren Keizah, Caden, Kyrie, parents Waynetta (Larry) Nakama, stepmother Estelle Hamamura, brother Jaxon Hamamura of Kauai, sister Jolene Simmons of Oahu, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, at the Garden Island Mortuary in Lawai. Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m. followed by a celebration of life at 10:30 a.m. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Romualdo Asuncion Pascual
Romualdo Asuncion Pascual, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away on May 19, 2024, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born on Feb. 7, 1957, in Sinait, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. He was a cook.
He was preceded in death by father Arcadio Pascual, mother Socorro Asuncion Pascual, brother Antonio Pascual, uncle Crispin Ragasa and aunt Leonila Ragasa.
He is survived by former wife Clair Cadavona Pascual of Lihue, son Lionel (Ashley) Cadavona of Pearl City, Oahu, daughters Leilah (Brannon) Rivera of Lihue, Lizelle (Tatiana Bohannon) Pascual of Las Vegas, Nevada, grandchildren Kayla, Kyrie, Gaige Rivera, Kingsley Cadavona, sister Regina (Walter Cortez) Pascual of Las Vegas, Nevada, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church in Lihue on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. followed by Mass at 10 a.m. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Thomas Lewis Makanani
Thomas Lewis Makanani, of Kapaa, passed away on July 27, 2024, in Kapaa at the age of 78. He was born on Oct. 17, 1945, in Honolulu. He was a retired heavy equipment operator with Goodfellow Bros.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lyndelle Makanani, mother Emily Makanani and many brothers.
He is survived by his daughters Kendra (Brad) Inanod of Kapahi, Kaylyn Makanani of Kapaa, grandchildren Tawehi Oana-Makanani, Lyndee Inanod, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service will be held at the Anahola Clubhouse at noon on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024. The family requests casual attire and flowers are welcome.

Donna Kay Raicevic
Donna Kay Raicevic, of Lihue, passed away on Aug. 15, 2024, at Garden Isle Healthcare at the age of 90. She was born on March 5, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in Leiters Ford, Indiana. She graduated from East Los Angeles College and did nurses training at Los Angeles General Hospital. She worked as a Registered Nurse in Los Angeles, Santa Cruz and San Jose, California and retired to Kauai in 2001. In her retirement she enjoyed travelling, practicing healing touch, volunteering with Kauai Hospice, and watching her grandson grow up.
She was preceded in passing by parents Robert and Isabel Kerr, siblings Evelyn (Junior) Seese, Robert (Leda) Kerr, Mary Franz, and Jim (Fran) Kerr.
Donna is survived by her daughter Annette Leftheriotis, grandson Keith Altieri, sister Judy (Walt) Talbott and various nieces and nephews.
Private services were held, with a Celebration of Life to be held later in the year. In Lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Kauai Hospice, or the Kauai Forest Bird Recovery Project.

Scott L. Hardwick
Scott L. Hardwick, of Kekaha, passed away on Aug. 24, 2024, on Oahu at the age of 66. He was born on Dec. 23,1959. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and retired from Corteva Agriscience.
He was preceded in death by father Jerry Hardwick.
He is survived by wife Kate Okihara Hardwick of Kekaha, son Greg Hardwick of Kekaha, daughter Lauren Hardwick of Kauai, grandchild Khat Hardwick-Kaohelaulii, mother Sandra Hardwick of Washington, sister Kandy Jo (Bruce) Bailey of Washington, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, at the Garden Island Mortuary in Lawai. Visitation begins at 9 a.m., followed by a celebration of life at 10 a.m. Inurnment will follow at 1 p.m. at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Crystal Marie Belmonte
Crystal Marie Belmonte, of Kilauea, passed away on Aug. 29, 2024, at home in Kilauea, Kaua‘i, at the age of 58 with family by her side. Born on Nov. 12, 1965, on O‘ahu, Hawai‘i. Crystal was a cashier at Kilauea Market and most recently at Papaya’s Health Food Store. She loved her family, friends and going to the beach. Crystal was known as Aunty Booney to all the kids she would encounter.
Preceded in death by her mother Marjorie Noblisse and father James Borges.
She is survived by husband Eric Belmonte of Kilauea, daughter Heidi Sur (Shaun) of Kilauea, stepmom Yvonne Borges of Wailua, siblings Michael Borges (Dianne) of North Carolina, Russell Borges of O‘ahu, Paul Borges (Jodi) of O‘ahu, Denise Aoki (Urban) of Lihu‘e, John Borges of O‘ahu, three grandsons Steven, Ethan, Isaiah, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunties and uncles.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, at St. Sylvester Church in Kilauea. Visitation begins at 9 a.m., followed by Mass at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Kaua‘i Hospice.

Steven L. Absher
Steven L. Absher, 65, of Koloa, passed away on Aug. 3, 2024, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Woodstock, Illinois, on June 17, 1959, and was a contractor and business owner of Pacific Masonry and Pacific Island Pools. He was driven, hardworking, and determined to succeed. He loved the ocean; surfing, fishing, sailing, watching the sunset, skiing, listening to music, and watching football. He was kind, generous, and instilled the value of working hard onto his child.
He was preceded in death by his father Sam Absher.
Steven is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Mila Absher, daughter Alicia Absher (Christopher Ramelb) of Honolulu, Hawai‘i, mother Janice Absher of Gearhart, Oregon, sisters Kim (Mike) Abel of Aberdeen, Washington, Laura (Michael) Holgate of Gearhart, Oregon, beloved dog Black and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends.
The family would like to thank Wilcox Memorial Hospital and Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, at Kukui‘ula Small Boat Harbor beginning at 12 p.m. with a paddle out to follow at 2 p.m.

David ‘Kawika’ Cole
August 20, 1954 — December 31, 2023
David “Kawika” Cole, born on Aug. 20, 1954, passed away peacefully on Dec. 31, 2023, at sunset, surrounded by his loving family.
David graduated from Kapa‘a High School in 1972 and worked as an elevator inspector for NAVFAC for 30 years, retiring in Sept. 2021. During his career, he worked overseas in Italy and Japan, sharing those experiences with his family.
David is survived by his beloved wife Debbie Cole, and his children Joshua Cole, Nathan Cole, Dayna Cole Wong, Kainalu Cole, along with his four adored grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Cyrila, Anthony, Marilyn, Twila, Twayne, Twanda, Ron, and Mike.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024:

Cole Akio Forsen
Beloved son, Cole Akio Forsen, age 42, of Wailua, Kaua‘i, passed away in Portland, Oregon, on July 30, 2024. Born on Aug. 1, 1981, in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Takashi and Fusae Fujimoto, Carl and Hazel Forsen.
Survived by mother Denise, daughter Rian, brothers Cale (Lauren, Gaia-Grace, Bailey), Kai (Ehukai), Darin (Christine, Kai, Ava), uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews, hanai uncle Doug of Portland, hanai Kaluahine ‘ohana of Anahola who brought him joy.
A service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, at Lihu‘e Hongwanji Mission in Kapaia. Visitation at 9 a.m., service at 10 a.m.
Janet B. Scobell
Janet B. Scobell, 76, of Alton, Illinois, passed away at 10:05 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born on Dec. 31, 1947, in Waimea, Hawai‘i, she was a daughter of Alejandro Aquino, Sr. and Rose (Kahiamoe) Aquino.
She married James Scobell on July 9, 1997. He preceded her in death on July 26, 2022.
Janet’s favorite pastime was fishing. She also enjoyed taking care of her plants and dancing hula. She worked for many years as the VIP Manager for Alton Belle Casino, and prior to that had worked at various other jobs, including assistant manager of Goodwill in Alton.
Survivors include her children Michael Caberto, Jr. of Kekaha, Hawai‘i, Clifford (Marc Walz) Caberto of Kapa‘a, Hawai‘i, Carl (Christine) Caberto of Koloa, Hawai‘i, Jacque (Lesa) Jacoby, III of Gaston, South Carolina, Kristina Ottwell of Alton, 19 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, sister Rosita (Dave) Sanders of Austin, Texas, many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, oldest son Eddie Caberto, brother Alejandro Aquino, Jr., and sister Angie Napulou.
No services are currently scheduled but will be held at a later date.
