LIHU‘E — The Department of Pubic Works (DPW) said the Lihue Refuse Transfer Station will be closed for renovations from Sept. 11 through Nov. 1.
“These renovations will allow our refuse transfer station to operate more efficiently while providing environmental safeguards,” said Department of Public Works Engineer Troy Tanigawa. “We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate the community’s understanding.”
The Kaua‘i Resource Center will continue to remain open during the closure. Acceptable items, such as household batteries, fluorescent lights and packaging materials will continue to be accepted, along with the distribution of backyard composting bins.
Large bulky items, such as furniture over 3 feet long or mattresses must be taken to the Kekaha Landfill. Scrap metal, appliances and eWaste can be brought directly to Puhi Metals Recycling Center on Puhi Road.
Reynolds Recycling will continue to operate the HI5 Redemption Center, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed for lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m.
The rehabilitation of the RTS is part of the Island-Wide Refuse Transfer Station Improvements Project, which targets stations in Hanalei, Kapa‘a, Lihu‘e and Hanapepe. The improvements specifically targets water quality standards and stormwater discharges.
