KAPAA — Number 2 power ranking by Scoring Live Kahuku High School took a 66-7 victory over Waimea High School, unranked despite winning back-to-back Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II titles, on Saturday night at the Kahuku campus.
And No. 6 ranked Kapolei Hurricanes blew past No. 13 Kapaa High School Warriors 35-16 at Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex. No details were available from the Waimea and Kahuku matchup other than the score posted on ScoringLive.com.
Over at the Kapaa stadium before an audience of several hundred people enjoying the final preseason football game, the visiting Division I Hurricanes — it is a good thing that Hurricane Gilma dissipated from the strong wind shear and cooler water temperatures surrounding Hawaii — took control from the opening possession, and never looked back.
Kapolei quarterback Lia‘Tama “Tama” Ami-Sone broke open the score books by connecting with Tristen Inay on an 11-yard pass play to strike following the Hurricanes’ opening possession, and the first of two touchdowns netted in the first quarter.
Ami-Sone hit Inay on a 10-yard scoring strike with 5 minutes and 15 ticks showing in the quarter.
Kapaa had a chance to answer as Nainoa Simmons did some serious groundwork on the ensuing drive that resulted in a failed field goal from just outside the 20-yard line as time ran out on the quarter.
Warriors special team player Nash Burkart kept the scoring window open on a pass interception to inside the Kapolei midfield stripe to open the second quarter. Micah Rapozo capped the drive with a field goal after Kapaa had peeled off nearly half of the quarter’s time.
With just three ticks before the half, Kapaa’s Simmons struck pay dirt on a 7-yard rush to the end zone. Rapozo did the point after attempt boot for the 14-10 Kapolei lead at the break.
That was as close as Kapa‘a could get, as Kapolei pulled away in the second half with two rushing touchdowns in the third quarter and a score in the fourth frame, while allowing Kapaa a single score in the final quarter.
Ami-Sone closed the Kapolei score books on a 31-yard strike to Zayne Pasion with 8:04 showing on the game clock.
Kapaa answered with Simmons driving to inside the Hurricanes’ 10-yard line before Kapolei intercepted a Warrior aerial in the end zone.
Another turnover, this time Kapaa’s Brayden Bermoy plucking the Kapolei air ball on the Hurricanes’ 32-yard line from where Warriors signal caller Evan Daligdig did the honors through a 9-yard scoring keeper. Beset with penalties, Rapozo booted the point after attempt from way outside for the 35-16 final score.
Kauai High School will travel to Hanapepe Stadium on Saturday when the Menehune host the junior varsity contest starting at 4 p.m. The varsity contest starts 30 minutes following the completion of the JV game.
