WAILUA — An apartment fire on the eastside of the island caused an estimated $35,000 in damage on Thursday morning.
The Kauai Fire Department (KPD) responded to an emergency 911 call at approximately 10:20 a.m. for a report of smoke coming from one of the apartments at the Plantation Hale Suites in Wailua.
Fire crews with the Kapaa, Kaiakea and the Lihue fire stations all responded to the call, including the on-duty battalion chief and Kauai Fire Prevention Bureau.
Kapaa Fire Station personnel were on the scene and immediately observed smoke spewing from a one of the units on the second floor of the property.
Fire crews also reported not hearing any alarms nor did they witness anyone in distressed, so they took command of the scene and made a forced entry into the apartment that was engulfed in smoke. The fire was quickly pinpointed to the kitchen and a fire extinguisher was used to contain the fire.
By that point, the smoke had also traveled throughout the building so, as a precaution, fire officials shut off the power and evacuated the building while they searched the adjacent apartments for fire extensions. When none where found they successfully ventilated the property so inspectors with the Kauai Fire Prevention Bureau could conduct a full investigation.
The fire was deemed accidental.
