WAILUA — The search for a Lihue man, who went missing on Saturday, was suspended on Tuesday.
The three-day multiagency search for Gary Gushiken, 50, who went missing in water off Nukolii Beach in Wailua was suspended on Tuesday evening.
“We are grateful for everyone’s efforts in the search for Gary Gushiken, especially during the elevated surf and high wind conditions,” said Kauai Fire Department Chief Michael Gibson. “Our deepest condolences go out to his loved ones during this difficult time.”
Gushiken went missing in water off Nukolii Beach on Saturday at around 6:40 p.m. According to a report, first responders responded to the emergency 911 call of a missing snorkeler.
Personnel with the Kauai Police Department (KPD), Kauai Fire Department (KFD), the U.S. Coast Guard, Ocean Safety Bureau, Kauai Search and Rescue, along with the Department of Land and Natural Resources and the on-duty KFD Battalion Chief responded to the call.
The man was last seen about 100 yards offshore when he separated from his party and went missing. Air, land, and sea resources were conducted in the search through Tuesday.
“Our hearts go out to Gary’s family, friends and loved ones,” said KPD Assistant Chief Mark Ozaki. “We truly appreciate all our search partners involved these past three days.”
Volunteers with Life’s Bridge’s, a grief counseling service, has offered support to the missing person’s family.
