LIHU‘E — A red flag warning was issued for the leeward side of Kaua‘i because of high winds that could produce gusts over 50 miles per hour.
The National Weather Service said the warning runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. A red flag warning means critical fire weather conditions are either occuring or will occur shortly.
“A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry fuels can contribute to extreme fire behavior,” the National Weather Service said in issuing the warning. “Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
As a result of the warning, the Kaua‘i Fire Department advised people to refrain from all outdoor burning, that includes outdoor cooking, and avoid the use of mechanized equipment outdoors. The department also advised motorists not to drive vehicles in tall, dry grass and to ensure trailer chains do not drag on the ground.
To report a fire call the Kaua‘i Police Department at 808-241-1711.
