LIHU‘E — Hawaiian Telcom on Thursday, Aug. 22, announced that it will complete its fiber infrastructure expansion on Kaua‘i at the end of this year.
When the expansion is complete, Kaua‘i will be the third island that is “fully-enabled” with fiber infrastructure.
“Kealia (zip code 96751) and Lawa‘i (zip code 96765) were the first two ZIP codes in the state that Hawaiian Telcom completely enabled with fiber in 2022,” said Hawaiian Telcom President Su Shin. “Today, more than half of Kaua‘i’s residents and businesses have access to our fiber infrastructure, and our team is working hard to enable the rest of the island by the end of the year.”
Hawaiian Telcom’s fiber infrastructure enables access to its 100 percent fiber internet service, Fioptics, with the state’s fastest upload speed, which is currently 600 Megabits per second, and its next-generation TV service, Fioptics+.
Fioptics+ TV was recently approved by the state’s Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and became available to fiber-enabled Kaua‘i households on Aug. 5. This is the first competition for TV service on Kaua‘i in 30 years.
“Improved access to online information and services remains a growing need throughout the state, especially in our rural community here on Kaua‘i,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami in the announcement.
“We are grateful to Hawaiian Telcom for being part of the solution to address these concerns. Hawaiian Telcom’s efforts to expand its fiber network will improve digital access for our residents, and it is a huge step towards updating our island’s broadband infrastructure and capabilities.”
Fioptics+ transforms a TV into a multi-functional entertainment hub, combining traditional TV service with the streaming services you subscribe to on one platform.
Since 2010, Hawaiian Telcom has invested more than $1 billion to expand and support its network to serve its customers.
