During the Menehune’s first game of the 2024 football season, Waimea struck during its first possession of the game when signal caller Kyka Linoz found his receiver on a short pass. The receiver found open ground and picked up a 67-yard touchdown that was tagged with a personal foul flag.
The infraction was assessed on the ensuing kickoff and the Menehune had an early 7-0 lead until the third quarter.
Coming off the break with ample light remaining, Kailen Niheu-Kamaka found the end zone in heavy traffic on a 5-yard charge after contributing to the opening second half kickoff return drive. Niheu-Kamaka booted the point after attempt for the 14-0 lead that was answered by Na Ali‘i in the fourth quarter.
With 1:45 showing in the contest, King Kekaulike prevented a shutout when QB Kingston Goliday found Cason Brooke at the Waimea 5-yard line. Ahe Sumibkay put the period on drive with a 5-yard touchdown with 1:36 showing for the final 14-7 scoreboard reading.
Waimea, the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II two-time champion, will face nationally ranked Kahuku High School on Aug. 31 at the Kahuku campus.
The Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation football season opens on Sept. 7, when Waimea hosts Kaua‘i High School at Hanapepe Stadium. The JV game kicks off at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity contest kicking off 30 minutes following the completion of the JV contest.
