LAWA‘I — A 66-year-old visitor from Japan was pulled from the water off Lawa‘i Beach in South Shore on Wednesday, Aug. 14.
On Wednesday, first responders with the Koloa Fire Station were dispatched to Lawa‘i Beach at approximately 12:35 p.m. for an unresponsive snorkeler who was pulled from the water by a surfer who discovered the snorkeler face down 30 to 40 feet from shore.
Firefighters arrived on scene and immediately administered CPR on the man, who was unconscious.
Due to his heart’s activity, fire personnel immediately placed a automated external defibrillator (AED) and a mechanical chest compression device (Lucas) on the unresponsive snorkeler before the arrival of paramedics.
American Medical Response (AMR) personnel then took command of the scene and transported the man to the Wilcox Medical Center in Lihu‘e, where he remains in critical condition.
The scene was cleared at around 1:10 p.m. The nonprofit Visitor Aloha Society of Kaua’i is assisting the victim’s family.
