Shirley Medeiros (Wayne has a new, blue Kukui Grove Maintenance shirt on!) and her crew that included Ella Kimokeo and Phylli Correia were relishing Phyllis’s cottonberry tree that she has found on Saturday during the busy Kaua‘i Farm Fair Tribute.

Kaua‘i Community College Natural Science instructor Brian Yamamoto was giving away the rare tree for free (Sam Henriques got the clove tree!) and who got the avocado tree? Brian said the cottonberry tree has tiny berries that turn pink and yellow when ready, and in days when the tree was plentiful, it was not unusual to see keiki parked near the tree chomping on the berries (they got lots of seeds, he said) that have the sweetness of cotton candy.
State Farm Bureau’s Brian Miyamoto made the trip from O‘ahu to visit the Grove Farm Market (yep, the Nonaka’s are back from their recent trip) and the Kukui Grove Center event (Terri Mansfield of The Peace Pole Project got to meet Dave Sosner as well) … Kenneth Bray got to check out the K+M Craft fair offerings before resuming work on the tiki, and kudos to the Iguchi ‘ohana, Jeianna and Chris, on opening the storefront near the Subway in Waimea (they’re adjusting to Back to School hours).
Kudos to the many hands (Mayette Loseto secured donations of more than 500 pounds of sweet potato from Xing Lono Farm, and 250 ears of fresh corn from Aloun Farm) … Brian said Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke, after her Tatiana Weston-Webb Day, got to visit the Kaumakani plantings to check on the impact of the recent brush fire.
OK, gotta go check out the Pau Hana Market to see if everyone is still standing.
