LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau president Laurie Ho said the Kaua‘i County Farm Fair has traditionally been held in August, more recently, being adapted to take place during the three-day Admissions Day weekend.
The Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau, with support from the Kukui Grove Center, the Kaua‘i Grown program with the county’s Office of Economic Development, the USDA, Kaua‘i Bonsai Club, Garden Island Orchid Society, University of Hawai‘i College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources and more will be presenting a free one-day Kaua‘i Farm Fair Tribute on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The day opens with the Fruit and Vegetable Show participants submitting their entries in the area near the food court area. The collection will be displayed in area at the shopping center and is open to the public.
“I’ve got cucumber, right now,” said Hannah Huang, a longtime participant of previous farm fair fruit and vegetable shows. “I also have long eggplant, some tomatoes, and I don’t know if the cauliflower will be ready.”
The morning opens with free exhibits, educational speakers and entertainment from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The retail and commercial component will be brought in through the K+M Craft Market & Family Fun that will include XO, Mama and their line of cookies, breads, cakes and other goodies.
“We’re going to have the seeds available at The Grove Market,” said Rudy Sina of the Master Gardeners program. “But we’re having a table at the Farm Fair Tribute at Kukui Grove where backyard growers can come and talk about their plants.”
The Kaua‘i Bonsai Club and Garden Island Orchid Society will get a jump start on Friday when the combined exhibitors will have plants for sale starting at 4 p.m. The two exhibitors will be available all day Saturday in the area adjacent to Sone’s Delicatessen. Plants will be available for sale.
“We’re going to be there working on members’ projects,” said Butch Budding of the Kaua‘i Bonsai Club. “We invite bonsai enthusiasts to stop by and watch the members work on their projects. That’s probably a lot better than doing formal presentations. We’re going to be there Friday, and Saturday.”
