Kapa‘a High School football scored two touchdowns on Saturday night in a losing 35-12 to the Farrington Governors at the Farrington campus in Kalihi, O‘ahu.
During the Warriors inaugural jaunt onto the gridiron for 2024, the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division (HHSAA) I rated team broke the ice as time ran out in the opening quarter, when Ryan Peters found the end zone on a 2-yard scamper, according to information from the HHSAA and ScoringLive.com.
The point after attempt came up empty. The Governors answered the opening score with three scores in the second quarter and two scores in the third frame before allowing Kapa‘a the final score of the contest on a Nainoa Simmons-Kaohelauli‘i 1-yard charge into the end zone.
The Warriors’ PAT run attempt came up empty for the 35-12 Farrington victory.
In the victory that came on the ground, Farrington’s Kingsten Samuelu led the charge on scores of 33 yards, a pair of 3-yard runs and another 33-yard breakout in the third quarter.Samuelu finished the night with 129 yards of total ground coverage on 15 attempts.
Governor Zion Vea marked the final Farrington score on a 1-yard charge into the end zone late in the third quarter, as the Governors overpowered the Warriors on offense — 376 yards (199 passing) to Kapa‘a’s 209 (12 yards passing) yards.
Offensively, Simmons-Kaohelauli‘i led the Warriors ground game with 196 yards and a touchdown on 33 touches. Peters added 3 yards and a touchdown. Kamalei Gonzalves had one carry for 2 yards in the effort.
In the air, Kapa‘a QB Evan Daligdig completed two passes on 13 attempts for 12 yards. His receiver, Kawika Kupihea, had one reception for 13 yards.
Farrington, while scoring no touchdowns on passes, piled up 199 passing yards by its QB Donny Faavi to five receivers.
The next Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation preseason football game takes place on Friday, when Kaua‘i High School hosts Viewpoint School from California.
Kapa‘a is scheduled to host Kapolei High School on Aug. 31 at Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
Waimea High School, the two-time Division II title holder, will inaugurate its 2024 season with a preseason contest against Kekaulike on Saturday with a 6 p.m. kickoff at Hanapepe Stadium.
