KAPA‘A — Te ‘E‘a O Te Turama, under the direction of Maile and Kawika Tavares, soared to overall winners of the 22nd Heiva i Kaua‘i, which wrapped up on Sunday afternoon at Kapa‘a Beach Park.
Performing before an audience of thousands of people over two days, Te ‘E‘a O Te Turama captured top honors in the Group Ahupurotu, or elegant gown category, and the Group Drumming competition to outdistance the other participating groups.
Additionally, Te ‘E‘a O Te Turama individual performers added to the cache of winnings by taking top honors in their respective individual competitions, which were spread out over the field that included ethnic cultural and educational displays and exhibitions.
The Heiva experience was enhanced with the local food offerings that ranged from shave ice to the more exotic Indian dishes.
A spread out campus of more than 40 craft and artisan vendors rounded out the event, which was sponsored by Hawai‘i Tourism Authority through the Community Enrichment Program and County of Kaua‘i, Division of Parks and Recreation.
