Kudos to Stacie Chiba Miguel’s aunt, Susan Brooks, for volunteering the Chiba ‘ohana to help with the heavy lifting at the Waimea Shingon Mission bon dance. Grandpa Chiba might be looking down and smiling because Susan stepped up because she does not want to see the bon dance legacy go away … Rev. Kohtoku Hirao said the first four letters of bon dance are “B-O-N-D,” and we should build bonds through bon dance … kudos to Michiko Hirao for that ono India cooking that sold out pretty fast on both Friday and Saturday nights.
Bon dance might be over for the Kaua‘i Buddhist Council calendar, but the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa has a special event on Friday … remember the debut of Stan’s Hawaiian Style Flying Saucers that first appeared as a fundraiser for the Protect Our Nation’s Youth baseball team? Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Chef Turquoise “Toto” Santos is excited about trying out a good andagi recipe she received, and of course, is Frecky Okada going to be drumming? Cheryl Shintani has some students from Japan that she’s excited about exposing them to Kaua‘i style bon dance.
Sandi Kato-Klutke (she said the bara-zushi at the bon dance was a winner!) said this week is National Farmers Market week … celebrate your local farmers and farm families at The Kaua‘i Culinary Market at The Shops at Kukui‘ula on Wednesday, the county’s Sunshine Market at Kapa‘a Beach Park on Wednesday, the Waimea Farmers Market at the entrance to the Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital on Thursday, and Grove Farm Market on Saturday.
