PUHI — And they all lived happily ever after.
Not. The Disenchanted storybook princesses are not-too-happy with the way they’ve been portrayed in today’s pop culture. The lineup of princesses throw in their tiaras and set off to set the record straight in the Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre After Dark program’s “Disenchanted.”
The 18-rated — contains adult language and content — musical comedy opened on Aug. 1 to a near-capacity audience at the Puhi Theatrical Warehouse, commonly referred to as “the little black box.”
Performances take place on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Aug. 18 in a lounge-style format featuring low tables with beanbag chairs, regular bar-style tables and risers.
Tickets are available online by visiting the Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre website at www.hctkauai.org.
Forget the princesses you thought you knew states a short program description. These royal renegades are here to comically belt out the truth.
The Disenchanted received an “Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical” nomination from Outer Critics Circle Awards and a “Best New Off-Broadway Musical” nomination from Off Broadway Alliance.
Debra Blachowiak, president of the HCT, said Disenchanted comes on the heels of the successful Willy Wonka Jr. that recently closed at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall.
Following Disenchanted, the HCT has scheduled “The SpongeBob Musical” in the fall. Tom Frascatore, who recently worked the Summer Rising Stars and “Willy Wonka Jr.” is directing The SpongeBob Musical.
