HANALEI — An ongoing slope stabilization project along Kuhio Highway is going to make traversing the area a little more complicated for motorists in the weeks ahead.
HANALEI — An ongoing slope stabilization project along Kuhio Highway is going to make traversing the area a little more complicated for motorists in the weeks ahead.
The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation HDOT) said there will be nightly full closures of Kuhio Highway between Hanalei Plantation Road and Ohiki Road from Sunday, Aug. 4, through Sunday, Sept. 15. There will be a single lane closure leading up to the full closure of the highway.
“A full closure is necessary for crews to install a 24 (inch) drain line from the top of Hanalei Hill down the face of the slope,” said HDOT in an advisory. “This work is part of the Hanalei Hill Slope Stabilization Project.”
The single lane closure of Kuhio Highway will run from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday. The full closure of Kuhio Highway will run from 11 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday.
There will be no work after 4:30 a.m. on Fridays. There will be no work on Saturdays.
The upcoming project is part of Phase 2 of the Hanalei Slope Stabilization Project, which began in August 2023 and is anticipated to be completed in November 2025.
