LIHU‘E — Kumu Hula Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin, and the entourage of alaka‘i and keiki haumana of Halau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leina‘ala, left Kaua‘i on Wednesday to participate in the Queen Lili‘uokalani Keiki Hula on O‘ahu.
LIHU‘E — Kumu Hula Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin, and the entourage of alaka‘i and keiki haumana of Halau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leina‘ala, left Kaua‘i on Wednesday to participate in the Queen Lili‘uokalani Keiki Hula on O‘ahu.
Included in the entourage of hula performers and teachers, Tapua McKeague and Maiau Karratti are the solo dancers who will be vying for the Miss Keiki Hula and Master Keiki Hula titles, respectively.
Presented by the Kalihi-Palama Culture & Arts Society, the Queen Lili‘uokalani Keiki Hula opens on Thursday with the solo hula competition.
Halau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leina‘ala is one of 20 participating halau who come from O‘ahu, Kaua‘i, Maui and Hawai‘i Island. The halau perform the Hula Kahiko, or traditional hula, on Friday, then the Hula ‘Auana, or contemporary hula, on Saturday before awards for the group competition are announced.
The Queen Lili‘uokalani Keiki Hula, according to its website, will take place at the Exhibition Hall that will be home to a variety of fun Keiki Hula Festival activities.
That includes a Pop-Up Makeke that will showcase local artisans and crafts, Hawai‘i State Archives that will exhibit treasures of Hawai‘i’s royal family, a Ho‘ike Stage for hula and Hawaiian music, and the Paikini Plaza that will feature many of Hawai‘i’s renowned clothing designers.
