LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) said an island-wide outage took place on Wednesday evening at about 7:40 p.m. and “impacted all of KIUC’s roughly 34,000 members.”
The outage was caused by a fault at the Kapaia substation that caused all generation units to trip offline, KIUC said. The outage also caused the KIUC outage map to go offline.
In response, KIUC started restoring power to members within an hour as generation units were inspected and brought back on line. According to information from the KIUC Facebook page, approximately 40 percent of its members were restored and the outage map was restored by 8:30 p.m.
KIUC crews were still diagnosing the cause at 9 p.m., as power continued to be restored as generation units were inspected. There was no estimation on when power would be restored. KIUC reported that 50 percent of its customers had power at 9:30 p.m.
The Kapaia Power Station was back on line a little past 11 p.m., and all members are being restored, the KIUC Facebook page stated.
By Thursday morning, KIUC reported the Outage Map was fully updated.
“We’re getting reports that some members in the Anahola and Princeville are still without power,” KIUC said on its Facebook page. “Troubleshooters have been dispatched to inspect those areas.”
KIUC extended its mahalo for the patience demonstrated by members during the outage.
