KILAUEA — A Maryland state man died after being pulled from the water off Kauapea Beach in the North Shore earlier this week.
On Monday afternoon, July, 8 first responders with the Hanalei Fire Station were dispatched to Kauapea Beach, also known as Secret Beach, at approximately 1:47 p.m. for an unresponsive swimmer who was receiving CPR from beachgoers.
Firefighters with Fire Station 1 arrived on the scene and immediately took over and continued advanced resuscitation efforts on the swimmer until medics arrived at the scene.
Once first responders with American Medical Response (AMR) arrived they immediately took command of the scene and continued to provide advanced life support. The victim was then transported to the Wilcox Medical Hospital in Lihu‘e. He was pronounced dead the following day on Tuesday, July, 9.
The victim has been identified as a 23-year-old male visitor from Maryland. His autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. Foul play is not suspected.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. This tragic loss reminds us of the potential dangers posed by our island’s waters,” said Criminal Investigations Division Lieutenant Anthony Morita.
“We urge all visitors and residents alike to exercise caution and be aware of the ocean’s unpredictable nature. Please heed all posted warnings and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.”
Kauapea Beach (Secret Beach) does not have lifeguards. Officials urge beachgoers to use caution when entering the water and strongly recommend only swimming at beaches that have lifeguard towers.
