Mary Lupua Innocencia Jaramillo Phillips
Mary Lupua Innocencia Jaramillo Phillips, 69, of Spokane, Washington, passed away at home on Feb. 9, 2024. She was born on Aug. 4, 1954, in Lihu‘e. She was a secretary/administrative assistant at the Department of Education.
She was preceded in death by parents Mariano V. Jaramillo and Beatrice L. Edison, brothers Harry Jaramillo, Anthony “Jay” Jaramillo and sister Rosalinda Jaramillo.
She is survived by husband Gene Phillips, son Tony Esparza, sister Evelina “Abby” (Warren) Palmeira and her faithful companions.
A service will be held at a later date.
Clifton Yoshisuke Hayashi
Clifton Yoshisuke Hayashi, of Kapa‘a, passed away on May 22, 2024, at the age of 87. He was born in Lihu‘e on May 4, 1937. He retired from the U.S. Army and afterwards worked as a supervisor for C. Brewer Chemical.
He was preceded in passing by his loving wife of 53 years, Tomeko Hayashi and his parents Keisuke and Shizuko Hayashi.
Clifton is survived by his children Wesley Hayashi, Gene (Jacklyn) Hayashi, Christine (Stephen) Brown, grandchildren Starlene Baptiste, Charles Brown, Maile Maeda, Trevor Boro, Kira (Tyrus) Ceria-Lux, Justin (Camille) Hayashi, Mitsy Hayashi, Ridge Hayashi, Keesha Brown, great-grandchildren Cherie (Noa) Townsend, Renee Baptiste, James Baptiste, Kahealani (Arist) DeWolff, Ponomaikalani Yoshizawa-Brown, Tiare Brown, Taneal Brown, Kalanuikea Baptiste, Ezikiel Brown, Akoni Villatora, Alize Brown, Kaiea Lum, Makoa Lemke-Hayashi, Charles Jr. Brown, Kimie Maeda, Khailee Maeda, Kaia Ceria-Lux, Cassie Hayashi, Jordyn Hayashi, Kyrus Ceria-Lux, Cyrus Chase Brown, great-great-grandchildren Naveah Baptiste, Tatienna DeWolfe, Natalija DeWolff, Keawe Townsend, Jaxon Baptiste, siblings Joan Yamamoto, Nelson Hayashi, Jean Naito, and Melvin (Eunice) Hayashi.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, with services from 11 a.m. at Kapa‘a Jodo Mission and burial to follow at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe at 1 p.m.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Gilbert Toshio Tanaka
Gilbert Toshio Tanaka, of Kapa‘a, passed away peacefully at home on June 18, 2024, at the age of 91. He was born on Oct. 25, 1932, in Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired proprietor of Tanaka Jewelers & Flowers, where he repaired watches and jewelry and grew orchids for the business. He also worked at Kilauea Plantation and Wailua Golf Course.
He was preceded in death by parents Hajime and Isayo (Nakamura) Tanaka, sisters Alice Saito, Elaine Hirano and Bernice Kashiwai.
He is survived by wife of 63 years, Fumiko Tanaka, daughter Rae (Lyle) Miyasaki of Phoenix, Arizona, son Wade (Krishen) Tanaka of Lihu‘e, grandchildren Tyler Miyasaki, Katelyn Miyasaki, Lianne Tanaka, Brant Tanaka, Paige Tanaka, brother Abraham (Ani) Tanaka of Honolulu, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, July 12, 2024, at the Kapa‘a Jodo Mission starting at 9 a.m. Service officiated by Bishop Ishikawa will begin at 10 a.m. The family requests casual attire.

Harry N.V. Jaramillo Sr.
Harry Namokueha Villaren Jaramillo Sr., 76, of Lahaina, Maui, passed away on Jan. 6, 2024, at Kula Hospital. He was born on Sept. 29, 1947, in Lihu‘e. He was a heavy equipment operator and mechanic at Pioneer Mill.
He was preceded in death by parents Mariano V. Jaramillo and Beatrice L. Edison, brother Anthony “Jay” Jaramillo, sisters Rosalinda Jaramillo, Mary L. Jaramillo Phillips and son Guy B. Jaramillo.
He is survived by sister Evelina “Abby” (Warren) Palmeira, children Tracy (Chris) Kellier, Jessica Jaramillo, Leslie Jaramillo, Harry Jaramillo Jr., Preston Jaramillo, longtime friend Sue Hopkins, 29 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Kula Hospital for providing exceptional care.
A service will be held at a later date.
Emilia ‘Loling’ Respicio Galicinao
Emilia “Loling” Respicio Galicinao, of Kaumakani, passed away on May 21, 2024, in Waimea, Kaua‘i, at the age of 80. She was born on Jan. 9, 1944, in Bangui, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. She was an agricultural field hand for Olokele Sugar Co. and Gay & Robinson.
She was preceded in death by husband Gregorio Cardona Galicinao, parents Braulio and Maria Lagundino Respicio, siblings Isabel, Rubio, Melicio, and Emilio Respicio.
She is survived by son Wayne Galicinao of Kaumakani, daughters Ella Galicinao of Makaweli, Georgeatte (Fred) Galicinao-Cayaban of ‘Ele‘ele, Tina Galicinao (Curtis Diamond) of Lihu‘e, grandchildren Ashley Rose Galicinao-Ripley of Honolulu, Bryson Cayaban of Texas, BreeAnn (Jordan) Cayaban Pineault of Texas, Braelyn Cayaban of Colorado, Justin Malabe (Tisha Remata) of Hanapepe, Javin Malabe of Lihu‘e, Tiani Malabe of Lihu‘e, great-grandchildren Qhaysen Remata Malabe of Hanapepe, Qhaiyah Malabe of Hanapepe, sister Cristina Respicio Gonzales of Philippines, cousins Marcelo Garvida, Lydia Beltran, Myrna Cacal of California, numerous nieces, nephews and other cousins.
A service will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo. Visitation from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., Mass at 10 a.m., and burial to follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Rafael Gonzalez Villagomez
Rafael Gonzalez Villagomez, 67, of Kalaheo, passed away on June 9, 2024, in Tecate, Mexico. He was born on June 1, 1957, in LaMora, Michocan Mexico. He was the owner of Rafaels Aloha Tacos.
He is survived by wife Janice Leal, sons Jessie Villagomez, Rafael Villagomez and nine grandchildren.
Rafael earned the nickname of “The taco man” through his business. He ran his business out of his trailer for nine years, traveling all over Kaua‘i, mainly at the farmers market held at the Kaua‘i Community College in Puhi and the Hanapepe Friday Night in Hanapepe weekly. He also did concerts and the 4th of July celebration at Po‘ipu Beach, among other events.
A memorial service will be held for friends and family on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at St. Raphael Church in Koloa. The service will begin at 10 a.m.
Elizabeth Javonillo Bermudez
Elizabeth Javonillo Bermudez passed away on June 9, 2024, in Torrance, California, at the age of 73. She was born on Jan. 19, 1951, in Mambog, Sta.Cruz, Ilocos Sur Philippines. She was a registered nurse.
She was preceded in death by parents Ruben and Marcelina Bermudez, brothers Danilo, Fred Bermudez and niece Czarina Bermudez Ibana.
She is survived by nephews Michael (Pua) Bermudez of Koloa, Rexy (Summer) Bermudez of ‘Ele‘ele, Justin Bermudez of Hanapepe, nieces Hazel (Ronny) Bermudez-Mabini of Orange County, California, Diana Mae Bermudez Navarro of Orange County, California, Grace (Avelino) Bermudez of O‘ahu, Karla Bermudez of O‘ahu, grandnephews and grandnieces Jaydan Makale‘a Bermudez-Mabini, Dr. Alexys (Thomas) Bermudez, Noah Bermudez, Adrienne Bermudez, Maika Bermudez, Deegan Bermudez, Brennan Bermudez, Paxton Bermudez, Ayva Rae Sevidal, Alina Rose Sevidal, great-grandnephew Kala Bermudez, brother Roy (Juanita) Bermudez of Lawai, sisters Emila (Antonio) Navarro of Hanapepe and Maria Vega of Carson, California.
A service will be held on July 19, 2024, at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Kekaha. Visitation is from 9 to 10 a.m., with Mass to follow. Burial will be at Kekaha Cemetery following the service. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Francisco Manuel, Jr.
Francisco Manuel, Jr., 73, former resident of Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i, died Tuesday, June 11, 2024, in Westport, Washington.
Francisco was born on Aug. 13, 1950, in Lihu‘e to Francisco and Josephine (Mahinai) Manuel, Sr. He lived on the island until 2019, when he moved to Carson City, Nevada and then in July of 2023 he moved to Longview, Washington where he also spent time in Westport, Washington fishing.
He was married to Maxine Ramos from 1970 until their divorce in 1976. He later married Cindy Alalem in 1993. They later divorced in 2003.
Francisco worked for his cousin Henry Rabot in Kapa‘a as a contractor.
He enjoyed fishing, camping and being outdoors.
Francisco is survived by five sons Patrick Manuel of Newport News, Virginia, Sam (Brandy) Alalem of Longview, Washington, Shawn Manuel of Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i, Francisco Keola Manuel of Phoenix, Arizona and Dwayne Mendonca of Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i, six grandchildren Keysha Alalem, Skylyn Fagarang Alalem, Samantha Fagarang Alalem, Shaniyah Martins, Kawika Manuel, Koali‘i Manuel, great-grandchild Kamaiyah Pacleb, brother Selso (Christy) Manuel of Kaua‘i, sister Cemona Manuel of Kaua‘i, numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen, Washington.

Leilani J. Arruda, of Kekaha, passed away on June 2, 2024, at home at the age of 86. She was born on Aug. 31, 1937, in Honolulu, O‘ahu. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by father William Lopes, mother Gussie Ahnee, daughter Roxanne Arruda, granddaughter Trinette Vegas, brothers Lawerence Ahnee, Thomas Ahnee, William “Bill” Kaiwa, Norman Ahnee, sisters Gladys Sotelo, Shirley Kauhi and Rochelle Ahnee.
