LIHU‘E — The Contractors Association of Kaua‘i (CAK) awarded $11,500 to seven student recipients on Thursday during its general membership meeting held at the Kaua‘i Philippine Cultural Center where Puakea Grill catered the convenient bento meal for the many guests that had to catch flights back to O‘ahu.
Judge and University of Hawai‘i Regent Laurel Loo emceed the scholarship presentation that included an award to Dylan Lee, who graduated from the President Theodore Roosevelt High School on O‘ahu.
Dylan, the son of Maureen Mo and Dennis Lee of Honolulu, earned eligibility for a CAK-awarded scholarship because his dad works for CAK member company Shioi Construction as an engineer. Dylan, who graduated first in his class of 345 students, will be a freshman at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa where he plans to major in architecture.
Destry Shibuya, the son of Kathy and Scott Shibuya, received a $1,500 Kenneth Shioi Memorial Scholarship to continue his studies as an engineering major at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
Kailee Oyama, the daughter of Mark and Wendy Oyama, received a $2,000 Guy Matsunaga Memorial Scholarship. She will be a junior civil engineering major at Santa Clara University in the fall. Kailee was recently selected to study abroad for the fall semester at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Kailash Letman, the son of Hiroko and Jon Letman, earned a $1,000 CAK Scholarship for use toward his architecture major at Wentworth Institute of Technology, where he will be a junior.
Donald RB Bumanglag, the son of Marilyn and Ronald Bumanglag, will be a second-year Carpentry Technology major at the Kaua‘i Community College where he carries a 3.5 grade point average. He was presented a $2,500 Kenneth Shioi Memorial Scholarship.
Talen Koerte, the son of Loren and Joy Koerte, graduated first in his Kaua‘i High School Class of 2024 as an Eagle scout and a record-setting swimmer. He will use his $2,000 CAK scholarship at the California Polytech State University in San Luis Obispo toward his civil engineering field of study.
Radon Sebastian, the son of Jackie Satta and Roger Sebastian, is a member of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation baseball champion Kaua‘i High School. He recently signed a Letter of Intent to play baseball at Edmonds Community College in Washington state where he will be a pre-engineering major.
The Contractors Association of Kaua‘i was established in 1957 as a trade association of licensed contractors, suppliers and businesses affiliated with the construction industry on Kaua‘i. CAK is also affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders.
