LIHU‘E — There is a lot going on for World Ocean Day that is celebrated on Saturday.
“We have a soft opening for the 6th annual Kaua‘i Society of Artists Washed Up Marine Debris Art Show 2024 on Friday,” said KSA treasurer Rose Anne Jones. “The real opening is on Saturday with all the artists, and activities for the family and keiki.”
As part of its Storybook Summer, the Storybook Theatre will be hosting a World Oceans Day live performance (and Facebook live stream) on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., coinciding with the weekly Hanapepe Friday Night Art.
On Saturday, Ho‘omalu Ke Kai hosts a family-friendly World Ocean Day that will include a community beach cleanup at the Nukoli‘i Beach behind the Outrigger Kaua‘i Beach Resort, live music, craft vendors and a silent auction fundraiser to raise awareness about Ho‘omalu Ke Kai. KSA announced the Washed Up Marine Debris Art Show will open at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Following a day punctuated with keiki activities, the opening reception starts at 6:30 p.m.
Washed Up, co-sponsored by Surfrider Foundation, runs daily from noon through June 28.
A few doors down from the KSA Gallery, Jean Souza, the on-site manager for Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery (KOD), is excited that besides the KOD, several other tenants from the Kaua‘i Grove Center will be hosting ocean-themed activities
Small Fry Kaua‘i will be presenting “Sips and Sunshine,” a summer celebration on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. when refreshing beverages will be available by the Girly Pop Hawai‘i, an interactive summertime photo booth, a pretend play station featuring some of keiki’s favorite wooden toys, a sidewalk sale, and the debut of Small Fry’s summer sweet cart — Crunch &Munchkin.
Souza said a number of Kaua‘i ocean organizations and Kukui Grove tenants will be assembled along the Kukui Grove main concourse offering a number of learning and activity stations.
Some of the hands-on stations include a keiki wildlife habitat game, an introduction to Kaua‘i seabirds and wetland bitrds, knowing about Kaua‘i’s rarest seabirtds and how you can help protect them, gyotaku fish prints and fish anatomy, Whale-of-fortune spinning wheel game, make your own fingerprint ocean scapes fan, make-and-take ocean jigsaw puzzler, ocean-themed temporary tattoos, the Smile Lab photo booth and more.
Some of the participating tenants and friends joining the Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery are the KSA, Surfrider Foundation, Small Fry including the Archipelago Research &Conservation, the Friends of Kaua‘i Wildlife Refuge, Ainofea, the Little Babes Club and more.
