Help for Maui businesses trickles down slowly

Carlos Montano, owner of The Sun Spot in Kihei, applied for a Maui Business bridge grant 9 months ago, but only got half of the money and at the nine-month mark has been told he has been approved for the rest of the $6,190 bridge grant to pay for the store supplies that he bought. But the money is coming too late to save Montano’s storefront.

Carlos Montano, owner of The Sun Spot in Kihei, saw business drop dramatically in the aftermath of the Aug. 8, 2023, Maui wildfires, but held on for months hoping that the Maui Bridge Grant would help him turn it around.
