LIHU‘E — Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami, a fan of the North Shore Lions Club pancake breakfast that fuels the club’s scholarship fund, was called on to help distribute scholarships to North Shore students on Thursday at the Mo‘ikeha Building, Lihu‘e Civic Center.
Scholarship recipients Shyloh McCann, Melina Obar, Kailea Danielson and Tyler Tanaka each received scholarships from the North Shore Lions Club, and the Hunt Family Foundation. They represented the 29 North Shore students who shared in $58,000 in scholarship awards.
“They are very important people,” said North Shore Lions Club treasurer Gary Pacheco. “The Hunt family, we couldn’t do this without them.”
The recipients can apply each year they are still in school and keep their home address on the North Shore of Kaua‘i.
“We are very fortunate to receive financial support from our local community who understand why supporting the education of our North Shore residents is very important,” said Stuart Cain of the North Shore Lions Club. “This year, we raised $54,000 for the Scholarship Program. This money was awarded to 29 deserving North Shore scholarship recipients.”
For the past 19 years, the Kaua‘i North Shore Club has been raising funds for deserving North Shore student in the form of a Scholarship Program to help with school expenses. The club runs a golf tournament each year on the second Saturday of January as the primary fundraiser to raise the scholarship funds.
The golf tournament, with the help of our title sponsor Aloha Roofing Supply, and partnering with the Princeville Makai Golf Club, has grown over the past several years. The tournament is a popular event on the North Shore, and with the help of marketing from local media, sells out with more than 100 golfers each year.
“Our North Shore Lions Club strives to continue growing the fundraiser golf tournament so we can give the gift of education to deserving students,” Cain said. “Over the past five years, our Scholarship Program has distributed about $250,000 to local North Shore students.”
