LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Society of Artists (KSA), in sponsorship with Kaua‘i Surfrider Foundation, will open its Sixth Annual Washed Up – A Marine Debris Show on June 8 at the KSA gallery at Kukui Grove Center.
“We’re having our artists reception on June 8, which coincides with World Oceans Day,” said RoseAnn Jones, the KSA treasurer and show coordinator along with KSA president Renee Palmer.
Artist Amanda JS Kaufman, describing herself and her husband Matt, the coordinator of Kaua‘i Surfrider Ocean Friendly Restaurants, as “Kaua‘i wildlife conservationists,” is planning a series of activities during the Washed Up exhibit that runs to June 28.
On World Oceans Day, Kaufman is hosting an educational marine debris pendant necklace-making workshop designed for keiki between ages 7 to 17 at the exhibit that is open for viewing daily from noon to 6 p.m.
Special viewing hours on Fridays are from noon to 7 p.m. Kaufman’s workshop runs from noon to 1 p.m. with the artists reception taking place from 5 to 8 p.m.
Enrollment to the workshop is free, but Kaufman is limiting the number of participants to 12. To sign up, email ajskaufman@gmail.com.
During the show period, keiki of all ages are encouraged to vote for their favorite marine debris show piece. Voters will earn one of Kaufman’s “Save the Hawaiian Monk Seal” stickers, and results of voting will be released after the show.
A few doors down from the KSA gallery, the Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery is also planning some World Oceans Day activities that will be revealed as June 8 nears.
“Lots of good stuff going on,” Kaufman said.
