First responders with the Kaua’i Fire Department (KFD) received a 911 emergency call on Sunday about reports of a natural gas leak at around 6:15 p.m. on Kekaha Road near Akialoa Road.
Firefighters from both the Waimea and Kaiakea fire stations along with Hazmat 8, the on-duty battalion chief and Kaua’i Police Department (KPD) personnel all arrived on scene shortly after 6:30 p.m.
According to the report, while en route to the scene, emergency crews contacted AmeriGas, who agreed to dispatch a representative to the scene. Upon arrival, first responders observed a small cloud of gas vapor spewing from a 120-gallon propane tank.
Both KPD and KFD personnel proceeded to immediately evacuate all residents within a 300-foot radius of Kekaha Road near Akiaola Road, and close a portion of Kekaha Road, from Akekeke Road to Akialoa Road.
Hazmat 8 slowed and temporarily contained the leak while waiting for the arrival of AmeriGas. A technician with AmeriGas arrived on the scene shortly after 9:20 p.m. and assisted Hazmat 8 to fully contain the leak. With the assistance from fire crews, the technician successfully hauled the gas tank from the affected area.
Hazmat 8 continued to monitor the scene and ensured all gas levels were safe before evacuated residents returned to their homes.
No injuries were reported. The scene was cleared by 11:45 p.m.
