PUHI — The need for scholarship money stirred the first Wine, Cheese and Chocolate Tasting event on Saturday at the Kaua‘i Community College Fine Arts Auditorium.
PUHI — The need for scholarship money stirred the first Wine, Cheese and Chocolate Tasting event on Saturday at the Kaua‘i Community College Fine Arts Auditorium.
“There are a dozen graduates of the college’s nursing program who are going on to pursue their bachelor’s degrees,” said the Mokihana Club. “Traditionally, we help these students. A dozen students mean we need to raise a lot of scholarships.”
Nearly 200 people braved the Saturday rainfall to enjoy the first event being held by the Mokihana Club, who got assistance from the KCC nursing students, both first-year as well as recent graduates.
Greg Askew, describing himself as a “community volunteer,” took over the chocolate table that offered at least eight different chocolate samplings, including Kaua‘i produced varieties.
“Greg got his ticket by volunteering, and said he could get me one, too,” said Candace Boxer of former Ono Pops fame. “But this is for scholarships, so I bought my own so I can just sit back and enjoy.”
Helena Cooney, a Mokihana member helping at one of the win tables, said the club has a member who has more than a decade of experience in wine. She said the club capitalized on that knowledge to put together the wine event
Attendees received a program guide containing a questionnaire about the feasibility of having the event repeated as a source for scholarship funds.
