HANALEI — Two visitors from Tennessee were rescued from the Hanalei River after losing their kayaks on Monday afternoon.
Personnel with the Kaua’i Fire Department (KFD) in Hanalei responded to the 911 emergency call for two distressed kayakers in the Hanalei River shortly after 3:45 p.m.
Ocean Safety Bureau (OSB) personnel with the North Roving Ski Patrol Unit were also on the scene with Hanalei firefighters. OSB personnel discovered both kayakers clinging to vegetation about three-quarters upriver of the Hanalei Bridge.
Rescue crews reported that “the kayakers lost contact with their kayaks after being caught in elevated waters.”
OSB crews transported the visitors to awaiting medics with the American Medical Response team for further evaluation. No injuries were reported and the scene was cleared shortly before 4:40 p.m.
“We are grateful for the quick response from our first responders in rescuing these two visitors,” said KFD Chief Michael Gibson.
Kaua’i officials are currently urging visitors and residents of upcoming hazardous weather conditions. The National Weather Service posted a flood advisory for Kaua‘i, as a Kona low system is expected to bring more rainfall to the Garden Island beginning on Wednesday, May, 15.
“With inclement weather forecast this week, we strongly advise everyone to avoid outdoor activities during these conditions. Rescues during heavy weather events are highly complex and dangerous, putting our first responders and those they assist at significant risk,” Gibson said.
