LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School lumber yard exploded for 15 hits against Kapa‘a High School on Tuesday night to claim a 9-2 victory and the Central Pacific Bank Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation baseball championship.
LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School lumber yard exploded for 15 hits against Kapa‘a High School on Tuesday night to claim a 9-2 victory and the Central Pacific Bank Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation baseball championship.
The victory under the lights at Vidinha Stadium came with the help of pitcher Josh Rego, who worked for 4 2/3 innings with four walks and three strikeouts.
Kaden Itamura stepped in to close the final 2 1/3 innings with no hits, no runs and a pair of walks.
Racen Pegeder, one of four Kaua‘i batters nailing four hits on the night, opened the score books in the opening frame by driving home Cyrus Fujimoto, the courtesy runner for Dalton John Bukoski who got aboard on a single with two outs.
The Raiders added three more runs in the second inning, and following a shaky fifth inning when the Warriors scored its pair of runs, Kaua‘i answered with four runs with the icing run in the sixth inning.
Leading hitter honors for the the Red Raiders belonged to Bukoski, who met the ball four times. Pegeder, Rego, Noah Ibaan and Itamura each marked a pair of hits apiece. Ibaan’s bat drove in two runners on his pair of two-baggers, and Rego marked an RBI and a double. Pegeder also marked a double and one RBI.
Kapa‘a’s Apo Kuhaulua and Rylen Yamaguchi were credited for the Warrior hits. Mana Chong and Iden Kaui were credited for the Kapa‘a scores.
With the win, Kaua‘i High School finishes the season with 10 wins and three losses and will represent the KIF at the Wally Yonamine Foundation Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II baseball championships that will take place on O‘ahu from May 15 through 17.
