Walter ‘Freckles’ James Smith Jr.
Walter “Freckles” James Smith Jr. of Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i, passed away on April 19, 2024, at his home at the age of 89. Walter was born in Hawai‘i on Nov. 22, 1934. He was the President for Smiths Motor Boat Service Inc.
He was preceded in death by parents Walter and Emily Smith Sr., son Kahanu Smith, sisters Charlotte Kaui, Pelma Larsen, Grace Apana and brother Malcom Smith.
Walter is survived by his wife Mokihana Smith, sons Kamika Smith, Kaleo (Stacie) Smith, 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Smith’s Tropical Paradise on the Wailua River on Saturday, May 18, 2024. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. with services to follow.

Emily Ortiz Artaho
Emily Ortiz Artaho of Koloa, Kaua‘i, passed away at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on April 21, 2024, at the age of 91. Emily was born in Koloa, she was a homemaker.
Emily was preceded in death by parents Patricio and Carmela Ortiz, husband Anastacio Ralph Artaho, daughters Rhonda and Janell Artaho.
She is survived by daughters Donna Higa, Enola Gay Artaho, Priscilla (Ralph) Yawata, Patrice (Randy) Silva, Ingrid (Laytham) Keaweamahi, son Ralph (Sandi) Artaho II, 21 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Friends may join the family on Saturday, June 8, 2024. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Services follow at 11 a.m. Services conclude with burial at 1 p.m. at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery, Hanapepe.

Jose S. Labrador
Jose S. Labrador passed away on April 19, 2024, at the age of 91. He was born on Feb. 8, 1933, in Kilauea, Kaua‘i. Jose passed away in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i. He was an irrigator for McBryde Plantation in Koloa.
Jose preceded in death by parents Ciriaco and Teresa Labrador, sisters Fabiana Guerro, Carmen Vicente, Leandra Bartolome, Cenona Acob, Ines Lazaro, brothers Felipe and Christian Labrador.
He is survived by wife Clarita Labrador, sons Rolando Labrador, Freddie Labrador, daughter Jayne (Shane) Conant and two grandchildren.
Services will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lihu‘e, on Thursday, May 16, 2024. Visitation begins at 8:30 a.m. Services will follow at 9:30 a.m. Burial to follow at Kalapaki Bay Memorial Park

Elden Layne Nakashima
Elden Layne Nakashima, age 68, passed away on Feb. 14, 2024, at Straub Hospital on O‘ahu. He was born on Oct. 19, 1955.
He was preceded in death by father Hitoshi Nakashima and mother Hazel Nakashima.
Elden is survived by brothers Dennis Nakashima of Kapa‘a, Gerald (Amy) Nakashima of O‘ahu, sister Jorene (Guy) Solusod of Lihu‘e, numerous nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held on May 11, 2024, at Lihu‘e Christian Church. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. with service to follow at 11 a.m.
The family requests no flowers and casual attire.

Leticia Pilipina Serapio
Leticia Pilipina Serapio, of ‘Ele‘ele, passed away on March 19, 2024, in Honolulu at the age of 63. She was born on Oct. 4, 1960, in Langiden, Abra, Philippines. She was a housekeeper at the Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club in Po‘ipu.
She was preceded in death by parents Pablo and Nena A. Pilipina and brother Carlito Pilipina.
She is survived by husband Hory C. Serapio, sons Norman (Maribelle) Serapio of Vancouver, Canada, Jay Mark (Charlyn) Serapio of ‘Ele‘ele, daughter Helen Grace (Rodolfo) Serapio of the Philippines, four grandchildren, sisters Natalia (Jovito) Bonifacio of the Philippines, Nora (Manny) Flores of the Philippines, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service will be held on May 25, 2024, at St. Theresa Church in Kekaha. Visitation is from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by Mass at 10 a.m. The family suggests casual attire and requests that flowers be omitted.
