H. Wallace ‘Wally’ Jaynes

A very good son, brother, a wonderful husband, a proud and loving dad, grand dad, great granddad and a strong, true and forever friend. A man who loved and respected God and country. Best not forget a kind and loving friend of animals. Wally lived his life learning and doing what needed to be done and willingly facing whatever challenges life presented. A man of many interests, Wally loved working, diving, flying, reading and music; played guitar, bongos and keyboard. Wally started his early working career in the logging industry of Northern California, by the age of 19, he owned his own log hauling truck. He often worked two and sometimes three jobs while raising a family: his boys Kenny, Steve and Dean. Wally was a master carpenter, a builder and a contractor. Living in the Laguna Beach area a major part of his life, he was naturally a water enthusiast and took up diving with his friends long before diving became such a popular sport. Diving and construction transitioned him to underwater construction and owning his own underwater construction company, Orca Divers in Laguna Beach. While working in that field he became an explosives expert and handled the explosives work required to build out the Dana Point Harbor and other projects along the So. California coast.

Strangely enough this led to Wally starting a career in photography. When underwater photos were needed for a 3-mile underwater pipeline job, he rented an underwater camera and successfully (with 15 minutes of instructions from the camera store owner) took the photos requested along with the doing the mechanical drawings he always provided for the job. (Wally’s mom, Virginia was a wonderful artist who worked for Walt Disney and Walter Lantz back in the day, and his brother Ken was a Military man who taught him mechanical drawing.) From that experience Wally enrolled in So. Coast College to study photography, soon to open his own rental darkroom. The Darkroom soon became a Laguna Beach icon of some 35 years, darkroom, camera store, custom printing, studio, wedding and event photography, videography, postproduction, etc.

Wally was a man of many interests and skills. He designed, drew the plans and built two homes for us and was a skilled furniture and cabinet maker.

At the age of 44 he met and soon married his wife Doris, then adding two teenage boys to his family. David and John Estrada became his boys, and they were blessed to have him as a father and friend.

Wally should have written a book. He had a great memory of his many adventures and could tell story after story.

Wally was a patriot at heart. Wally’s love of country was best expressed in his love of and 40 plus years as a volunteer with the Air Force Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol. He loved the challenge of flying search and rescue missions, and among those missions his best moment was when finding a crash site with the plane crew alive and waiting for rescue (most ‘finds’ don’t have such happy endings). He is ending his career with Civil Air Patrol as Lt. Colonel with many years as Safety Officer in both California and here in Hawai‘i.

Wally would say the best part of life was being a friend and helping others. That is what really sums up his life. And of course, being the best husband and father ever. Love you forever.

Rochelle Nora Paalua (Nishibata) San Agustin

Rochelle Nora Paalua (Nishibata) San Agustin, of Kekaha, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital at the age of 78. She was born on June 12,1945, in O‘ahu, Hawai‘i.

Rochelle was preceded in death by parents Masaichi, Nora (Akana), Louise (Holi) Nishibata, Charles P. and Elizabeth (Amina) Kaleikoa, Sr., brothers The Rev. Charles P. Kaleikoa, Jr., Wallace “Sonny” Koerte and sister Sylvia Koerte.

She is survived by husband Jose S. San Agustin of Kekaha, daughters Leilani, Leialoha “Loha” (Shandon Nordmeier) all of Kekaha, son Jose “Jr. Boy” and Shantell (Lau) of Waimea, six grandchildren Jelacia “Lacey” (Zachary “Zack” Kawai) Freitas-San Agustin, Kaycee (Chris Keh) San Agustin-Nordmeier, Bailey (Kevin Reyes) San Agustin-Nordmeier, Shandon “Kekai” San Agustin-Nordmeier, Kaimi “Imi”. (Miiah Fu) Lau-San Agustin, Kaimalie “Kai Kai” San Agustin, six great-grandchildren Sophia “Sophie”, Ezekiel “Zeke”, Lucas “Luca”, Hilina‘i, Avery, Kahali‘a, sister Bernadette “Bernie” Kaleikoa (Michael) Page of Washington State, brother Gerald “Kaipo” Nishibata of Lihu‘e, nieces, nephews and hanai children.

Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at The Waimea Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church, in Waimea, from 9 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. by Father Edwin. Burial to follow at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery, Hanapepe.

The family suggests that casual attire be worn, and flowers are welcome.

Desiree Kuilani Tung Loong

Desiree Kuilani Tung Loong, 65, of Kapa‘a, passed away on O‘ahu on April 14, 2024. She was born on Kaua‘i on Dec. 29, 1958, and was a Housekeeper at various hotels and condos.

Preceded in death by her parents Richard Hooikaika, Emmaline (Tung Loong) Hooikaika, grandparents Edward and Lucia Tung Loong.

She is survived by her husband Philbert Carvalho, brothers Ahkem (Catalina) Hooikaika, Frank (Ululani) Hooikaika, William “BJ” (Ellen) Hooikaika, Steven (Lizann) Carvalho, Alan (Gary Ann) Carvalho, sisters Elizabeth (Johnny) Hooikaika, Lynette (Don) Medina, Valerie (Joe) Contrades Charlotte (Ben) May, hanai son Kalani Poe-Hooikaika, mother-in-law Alice Carvalho, brother and uncle Ahkem (Roz) Tung Loong, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Kaua‘i Veterans Center in Lihu‘e with viewing from 9 a.m. and services beginning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.

Kelly Knudsen

Our beloved mother, sister, and daughter, Kelly Knudsen sadly passed away on April 23, 2024, at the age of 59. Kelly was born in Nuremburg, Germany, on Feb. 23, 1965.

Growing up Kelly excelled at sports including soccer and softball. As a military child she traveled all over the United States and Europe. Kelly graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and received a master’s degree in school psychology from the University of Wisconsin.

Kelly was employed by the Hawai‘i Department of Education for 25 years as a special education administrator. She had a passion for helping her students and the community of Kaua‘i

She was a wonderful mother, sister, and friend that was always there when you needed her and was a well-loved member of the community in Kaua‘i.

She was preceded in death by mother Constance Knudsen, grandparents Anne and Carl Knudsen, grandparents Delilah and Rudolph Ekar, as well as many aunts and uncles.

She is survived by her daughter Megan Frankl, brother Kraig Knudsen and father Jerald Knudsen.

Jonathan Hurd

Jonathan Hurd, of Hanapepe, passed away on March 29, 2024, on Kaua‘i at the age of 74. He was born on Sept. 22, 1949, in Glen Cove, New York. He was a commercial fisherman.

He is survived by wife Kathy Hurd of Hanapepe, son Gerald Hurd (Natalie) of Hanapepe, daughter Brook Bernardino (Audie) of Hanapepe, grandchildren Gianni Hurd, Gage Hurd, Gent Hurd, Gia Hurd, Evan Hurd, Mahealani Hurd, Ayden Bernardino, Maddox Bernardino, great-grandchildren Rylee Hurd, Jaeger Hurd, Haumana Kaleimamahu, Waiokalewa Kaleimamahu, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Garden Island Mortuary in Lawa‘i. Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Stanley ‘Hunk’ Viquelia

Stanley “Hunk” Viquelia, 71, of Hanapepe, passed away on April 1, 2024. He was born on Feb. 28, 1953, in Lihu‘e. He was a retired propane installer for Hawai‘i Gas.

He was preceded in death by parents Delfin and Mary Viquelia, sisters Veronica Shimatsu, Donna Joiner, Debra Zanders, brothers Rudy Viquelia, Anthony Viquelia and grandsons.

He is survived by wife Alicia Viquelia of Hanapepe, sons Levi (Gezmynn) Viquelia, Kelly (Kwai Yen) Viquelia of Hanapepe, daughter Rabekkah (Bryan) Bernades of Lihu‘e, sisters Anita Salvador of Chino Hills, California, Geraldine (Eliseo) Bolosan of Hanama‘ulu, brothers Jerry (Nadine) Viquelia of Ewa Beach, Donald Viquelia of Koloa, eight grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.

Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the Port Allen small boat harbor – fishing club house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Private scattering of ashes will be held at a later date.

Rodrigo Ronolo Dikilato

Rodrigo Ronolo Dikilato, of Kapa‘a, passed away on April 12, 2024, at Wilcox Medical Center at the age 65. He was born on Sept. 13, 1958, in Maliit Digos Hagonoy Dvo. Sur, Philippines. He was a house person at Sheraton Coconut Beach Resort.

He was preceded in death by mother Valeriana Dikilato and brother Godofredo Dikilato.

He is survived by wife Merilyn Dikilato, daughter Marue Dikilato, sons Kenneth (Marilyn) Dikilato, Chester (Cierra) Dikilato, father Merquicides (Hilda) Dikilato, brothers Benjamin (Pacita) Dikilato, Victor (Janita) Dikilato, Rey (Rema) Dikilato, sisters Carlita (Zimo) Mata, Paulina Ypil, Jeanette Dikilato and four grandchildren.

Friends may visit with the family on Friday, May 10, 2024, at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Kapa‘a. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. and Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at St. Catherine Cemetery.

Teodulo ‘Teddy’ Ganal Ganiron

Teodulo “Teddy” Ganal Ganiron, of Hanama‘ulu, passed away on April 28, 2024, at the age of 78. He was born in Sarat, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, on Nov. 8, 1945, and worked at Lihu‘e Plantation and Kaua‘i Nursery.

He was preceded in passing by his parents Fermin and Laureta Ganiron, parents-in-law Fermin and Catalina Motilla and sister-in-law Mercedes Motilla.

Teddy is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Pacita Ganiron, sons Ernest (Kimberly) Ganiron, Elmer (Sylvia) Ganiron, grandchildren Noah, Maison, Kaylyn, Owen, brothers Felix (Juliana) Ganiron, Jaime (Fresnaida) Ganiron, hanai sister Elena (Manuel) Respicio, numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Church with viewing from 8 to 9:30 a.m., funeral Mass at 10 a.m., and burial to follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.

Francisco “Cisco” Campos Jr.

Francisco “Cisco” Campos Jr. passed away on Monday, April 29, 2024, at Straub Medical Center in Honolulu, at the age of 76 years old. He was born on March 27, 1948, in Waimea, Kaua‘i.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force who served in the Vietnam War. He worked for the County of Kaua‘i Public Works Department Solid Waste Division for over 20 years and then retired as a baggage supervisor for United Airlines in 2016.

He is survived by his five daughters Tasha (Tommy) Stetter of Illinois, Leanna Campos (Rueben Games) of Waimea, Leilani Campos of Honolulu, Laola Campos (Chad Ishida) of Waimea, Noe Campos (Kawai Rapozo) of Waimea, grandchildren Jacey (Mana) Alquiza, Drayden, Jaycob, Daylen (Brennan) Ferrara, Pomai, Malu, Ezekiel, Ezra, Ivory, Kayce, great-grandchildren Kayzee-Marie, Tyson, Taelyn-Marie, Kaine, Irie Reign, sister Fely Dement of Hanapepe, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service will be held on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at the Garden Island Mortuary in Lawa‘i, beginning at 2 p.m., and burial will be on Monday, May 13, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe. The family suggests casual attire and requests that flowers be omitted.

Mason Rikio Fujimoto

Mason Rikio Fujimoto, of Hanapepe, passed away on April 30, 2024, in Waimea at the age of 43. He was born on Feb. 18, 1981, in Waimea. He was a cook and pre-school teacher.

He was preceded in death by his twin-brother Anson Fujimoto, grandparents Basilio Blanza and Esperanza Cabacungan Funtanilla, Robert G. and Hatsumi Akiyama Fujimoto.

He is survived by his son Gavin Fujimoto-Foster of Hanapepe, grandchild Xhysten Fujimoto, parents Bobby and Toni Fujimoto of Hanapepe, brother Craig Fujimoto of Hanapepe, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the Garden Island Mortuary in Lawa‘i. Visitation is from 4 to 5 p.m. followed by a celebration of life at 5 p.m. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Aletha “Puna” Kawelukawahinehololioolimaloa Goodwin Kaohi, of Waimea, Kaua‘i, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, in Waimea, Kaua‘i, at the age of 93. She was born on June 19, 1930, in Waimea, Kaua‘i.

She was preceded in death by her husband Mervin Kaohi Sr., son Mervin Kaohi Jr., and parents William K. Goodwin and Margaret Kamai.

She is survived by son Galen (Andrea) Kaohi of Waimea, Kaua‘i, daughters Kawailana Mata of Waimea, Kaua‘i, Lamela (Rodney) Kahalepuna of Honolulu, O‘ahu, Vivian (Michael) Tamashiro of Mililani, O‘ahu, 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren, brother Edward Taniguchi of Kalalea, Kaua‘i, numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at the Hanapepe Hawaiian Congregational Church in Hanapepe Town. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by a celebration of her life. The family suggests that aloha and casual attire be worn, flowers and leis are welcomed.
