NAWILIWILI — Kaua‘i officials announced that the Niumalu Bridge on Niumalu Road near Hulemalu Road will continue to remain closed until further notice.
“We have confirmed that the existing bridge has permanent damage, which will require a full replacement. In the meantime, we are looking into possibly installing a temporary structure over the existing bridge. However, if feasible, that could still take several months to complete,” said County Engineer Troy Tanigawa.
After a flooding event in April, county consultants inspected all bridges across the Garden island and determined that the Niumalu Bridge was unsafe for residents, prompting an immediate shutdown.
“We continue to work diligently to find a safe resolution to reopen this roadway as quickly as possible, especially for our residents and businesses in the affected area,” Tanigawa said.
Updates will be announced as new information becomes available. Anyone with questions may contact the Public Works Engineering Division at 808-241-4883.
This is another failure of our County Administration failing to be pro-active and identifying potential problems with our roads and infrastructure and now businesses, and local resident are suffering the results! That temporary bridge needs to commence work ASAP!
