May 1 is May Day, and there is a full day of festivities at the Royal Sonesta Kaua‘i Resort and The Shops at Kukui‘ula.
The Walter and Irmalee Pomroy Lei Day presented by the Kaua‘i Museum unfolds from 10 a.m. (lei for competition are accepted and judged before then) at the Puna Ballrooms at the Royal Sonesta with lei making demonstrations, lei available for purchase and exhibitions.
On the heels of the awards announcement, Kumu Hula Troy Hinano Lazaro and Halau Ka Pa Hula O Hinano open its May Day presentation with nearly 30 Kaua‘i vendors from 1 p.m. at Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall. The halau will take the stage for hula presentation from 6 p.m. as a fundraiser to travel to Maui, where it will defend its kane title from Ku Mai Ka Hula competition on Maui.
Merrie Monarch award-winning Kumu Hula Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin and Halau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leina‘ala will be at The Shops at Kukui‘ula on Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the weekly Kaua‘i Culinary Market with lei making demonstrations and a lei shop at the Palm Court area of The Shops to help with the halau’s trip to participate in the annual Queen Lili‘uokalani Keiki Hula competition on O‘ahu. The halau will offer a special performance from 5 p.m.
And then there is the annual Saint Catherine School carnival on Friday and Saturday in Kapa‘a, and don’t forget the annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk presented by the Hawai‘i Lodging and Tourism Association that starts with a 6 a.m. registration on Saturday at the North Vidinha soccer fields.
